2005 1200GS. 26,500 miles. original front discs.

when breaking hard from highish speeds i get a "shudder" through the front end - i've never experienced it before on any other bike - it's like a hard vibration felt through the bars.......i have only noticed it the in the last week or so....

is it possible the front brake discs are warped ? it is only noticeable under hard breaking at higher speeds....i don't notice it around town...

many thanks for any ideas on what it might be.....it's going in for the rear wheel bearings to be replaced under warranty soon so i should get the problem (with the shudder) fixed then but would be nice to have a better informed opinion on what it might be before i go to the dealer....

Had exactly the same Steve,
Fine in town but shuddering under hard braking
definetly warped discs
I got my dealer to stick the bike on the brake tester and it showed the front discs warped, replaced under warranty next day. End of problem.

Not uncommon apparently.

Not uncommon, mine developed the same symptoms during a week's holiday in the alps last year, same diagnosis, front discs replaced.

Anyoen know the cause, and will it recur with new discs?

Had this too, wot they said above.
1) Crap discs in the first place
2) No. Fine for the last 6k since replacement.

Ah bugger...

I noticed this shudder on the last rideout I had.

typically the warrentee thingy ran out 2 weeks ago!!

I guess I have to pay out for new disks then?

Anybody got any other ideas???

FWIW, Ducati Multistradas use the same discs and calipers. I'm not convinced that using four pot calipers without fully floating discs is a good idea..... :nenau

Mine had the same probem at 25000 km. New discs solved it, for about 3000 km, and then it was back again

My dealer replaced the second set. But he was not convinced about the discs being te problem (me neither) so now he tried to level the adjustment points on the cast wheels. A minor thickness difference there might be the cause of it.

Well, I let you know after about 3 more K's.

Anyone had this problem with spoke wheels???

2004 bike spoilt trip to the alps with warped discs. Got them replaced and warped again. 12 000 mile ervice on Monday so will get a third set, this time with a rear. Will ask how what the root cause is so it doesn't happen again. 3rd party discs/pads perhaps and if so, which ones?

At my 12K service (combined with 2year service) it was noticed that there was uneven wear on the front pads.

I replaced them almost straight after.
This shuddering has occured gradually over a period of time (now I think about it), although I cant remember when it actually started

The waranty has just expired now, however the pad wear fault was found whilst still under.

Do I take it back to the dealer ?? and start asking questions (politely)

Just begining the get the high speed brake shake too...at 4800 mls.

Hi all, believe it's my first post.

I'm on my third set of front discs due to warping.

What was different the last time is that I noticed that the stainless steel washers that are supposed to fit between the disc and the hub were not there. Accordingly the oblong shaped boltholes of the disc ate away at the aluminium hub. The result was that the new discs would start moving about after just a couple of thousand km.

Fixed now and I trust it will keep.

My 04 has started same and I emailed and faxed dealer as it was over last bank holiday and very last day of waranty. Dealer tells me once its out of garantee it's down to BMW as a special case. You would have thought they should honour it as it's not the bikes fault that the dealer was closed. Here's hoping

article about "warped"discs

i took the bike in to the dealer - the "technician" said it was due to incorrect tyre pressures....i rode the bike away feeling stupid - but the shudder was still there - back to the dealer - long story short - they are replacing the discs under warranty in a week or so....

My o4 GS is on its third set of discs in 14K miles. Last time Jefferies chaged discs, fork legs and callipers without quibble. Top Team.
