Back in September Vines serviced by GS and replaced under warranty the corroded front engine cover. Nine months later, surprise surprise, the paint is bubbling on the new one.

I contacted Vines and apparently had I bought the cover it would have a warranty, but because BMW replaced it, tough titties.

When I asked about items being fit for purpose I got directed to contact BMW customer service, although clearly Vines were not going to assist me. Apparently corrosion issues are only covered for the first two years, so even the extended warranty would not have covered this.

Has anyone had a warantied item replaced when the bike was out of warranty. It's three years old in July.

I took the front cover off my 08 GSA today to spray ACF 50 onto the foam block as I did with my previous GS to try and slow down the corrosion problem. Only to find NO FOAM. Have BMW finally accepted that the wet sponge under the front cover was not helping or did they simply forget to fit it on my bike?

I removed the foam from my '05 GS quite early on and sprayed WaxOil in behind the plastic cover. Apart from some very small marks due to road crap, my front cover is still in fine shape. However, the bike doesn't get used over winter so there's little chance of it getting eaten by bad nasty road salt.

Unfortunately, since manufacturers were forced to go to water based paints for enviromental reasons, the finish just isn't as durable as it once was and does need care to help stop the dreaded onset of corrosion.

To be fair to Vines, that is the case for all warranty replaced parts, you don't get a further 2 year warranty on the replacement. I called them recently about getting my front cover replaced and they were very up front about that. They aren't my dealer, but offered to do the replacement as its a known issue and stated the warranty stuff right away. I think its fair.

On a side note, I personaly believe the onset of corrosion is caused by a combination of the sponge, along with crud getting in the thread of the bolts. Mine showed no signs of corrosion until I took it in for its 6K service, and within days of it being back home, the paint had started to bubble. I very rarely ride in the wet, and the sponge was still wet, and there was a lot of gritty dirt round the bottom engine bolt.

just my thoughts though
