Hi, I am changing down from a r1200gs to a g650gs, there doesn't seem a great choice on a fender extender. Can anyone recommend one that gives decent protection. The standard fit item seems pretty small and as a all weather rider I can anticipate a few problems.

If I remember correctly I think I saw a photo on here with a g650gs fitted with a fender from a 700gs.

Any help appreciated.

Hi
The 650 is great fun.
You remember correctly about the mudguard,I am pretty sure it was Mallards bike.
I think it's possible to fit the 700 fender if you use the 700 fork brace as well.
Give Mallard a shout.

I just fitted a Pyramid 'Fenda Extenda' to my 650GS. Early signs are its a big improvement on standard, but could still do with being a bit longer.

This may help you Steve.

Not impressed with the ability of the standard G650GS’s mudguard at keeping the road crap of both me and the bike, I started to look round for alternatives.

This is what I did.

I swopped the front mudguard for the front mudguard of a F700. However, you also need the F700 fork brace as well.

As my bike was new at the time, I used new parts (from Motorworks), but you may be able to source S/H parts also from Motorworks.

I bought:

Front fork brace: BMW part No: 31428530363 £52.76
Front Mudguard: BMW part No: 4661852651 £36.86
F700GS Fender Extender £13.75
A piece of 1mm plastic that I had in the garage to extend the extender!

From memory, I think you will also need a bolt. Most of the original bolts swop straight over from one fork brace to the other, but I think one is too short. You may also need some small bolts to secure the brake-line bracket; can’t remember off-hand. I also used those black ‘pop-er’ rivets to hold the extender on. And that’s about it; without rushing it takes about an hour which also includes tea & toilet breaks.
