Quick question guys new pads for a 1100gs how thick's the brake lining. I know it seems like an odd question I'm asking because i had a new set fitted less than a week and 1000 miles ago.
I came back from Scotland trip late last night and there was a rubbing\scraping noise coming from the front end. When i've eased the pads apart and removed some brake fluid from the reservoir today the pads only seem to have 3-4mm on them?

No new ones to measure here, but they do look like poor value compared to the great chunks of friction material I get when I buy pads for the car, from memory 5mm for the fronts does sound like fairly fresh pads, have you stripped and cleaned the calipers recently, it seems almost an annual task on my bike.

Why did yo remove fluid from the reservoir?

I thought you were supposed to i.e when you've old pads in the pistons are further out using more fluid when its new pads they're thicker hence less fluid required.
When I'd eased the pistons back ever so slightly the fluid was brimming over the reservoir!! Just took a smidegeon out:):) 5mm below the top of reservoir the sight glass still looks full.

.

New pads, fluid near to the top. Then no need to feck about emptying/checking the fluid etc.

Hi,
Just measured new front pads (1150) which I happen to have and they are 4.5mm. Hope that helps

Just replaced mine, new about 6mm. Odd thing though.

When I pump the brake lever three or four times it's nice and "progressive/spongy" but then the four or fifth time it's rock solid, then it goes back to normal again. The brakes still apply each time.

Sausage finger syndrome.

Cheers folks, back into the garage to fill the reservoir back up then.

I'll know better next time!
