Claimed volume is 18 liters. Most bmw motorcycles I’ve had will hold quite a bit more. Anyone find out the max on a r1250r? JJH

I always put holes in the top of the tank metal filler tube of my 25 plate 1250R, to allow the air expansion trap to escape and enable more fuel into it when filling up. I only do this overfilling when I am filling up immediately before heading off on a long run with the BMW Club. I’ve had no problems with fuel spilling out because of this action, with the bonus it regularly provides the range in excess of 250 miles before I need to refuel.

How much extra fuel can you get in the tank by doing this modification?

I've just returned from a 3-week trip including a week in the Dolomites and averaged 61.5 mpg. Filling to the brim, I would regularly see a range of 220 miles.

My "RT-lite" is working out very well.

I just fill it click off, then dribble fill until an inch from the very top.

Usually get around 250 miles or just less doing that on my 1200 GS

My RS is claimed to hold 18 litres. I pushed my luck today and did ten miles after it said zero range remaining and got 17.8 litres in. Trip said 262 miles.

Been away so just seen messages. The photo is not the best but it shows 2 of the holes. There are another 2 directly opposite them on the other side of the filler.
What I did was block the filler off with a lot of cloth rammed in. I also put a small aerosol cap on top of the cloth to catch most of the burrs. I then drilled from the top with a thin nozzle attached to a portable vacuum cleaner catching the metal burr from the drill. Made sure filler tube had none left in after removing plastic cap, before I removed the cloth. Used a 4mm bit but had to remove the tankring to get a straighter angle on the drill bit.
As I said in the post I only fill up to the neck if I know it’s going to be a long ride, as don’t want full tank expanding the full if parked up in the sun. My BMW club regularly rides from near my home, outskirts of Newcastle, up into and around the Scottish Borders as far as north of Moffat, but generally totalling 200-230 miles. My 1250R shows a range in excess of 250 miles after I’ve filled up. At the pace we go, mpg figures are high 50’s to low 60’s. Been doing this since April 2025 and never had any problems.
Hope this helps.
