Picked up this bike last weekend, drove it pretty hard (75-80mph) to Cork and could almost see the gauge dropping, alarmed by this, I suppose this is not surprising, guessing from a half to 2/3rd of a tank of juice from Urlingford to just west of Cork, what is regarded as being normal for this bike please

Would the luggage boxes be a large part of the problem ?

Full tank on my GS1150 gives me about 175 miles of normal fast riding. I've got rid of the catalytic and put a decent air filter in. Gets plugs and injector balance regularly.
If I'm pushing it the consumption drops to about 100-120 miles to the tank full.
I keep the side boxes on all the time but rarely have a top box on, which will add a bit of resistance. Same tyres as yours - Tourances (not the XPs which are crap) at 2.2 front and 2.5 rear.

I get about 340 km per tank, (my bikes speedo is in km) I find that the firs 2 bars on the gauge take ages to disappear, then the rest go pretty fast...

Im getting just over 45 mpg at the moment on mine, but has gone up as far as 48 mpg, thats with a lot of motorway driving at around the 130kmph speed.

spritmonitor.de is handy for keeping track of it.

I notice that mine tends to drink the juice if I go over the 4000 rpm mark.
Also the fuel light seems to come on a bit early in my opinion.....

45mpg or 10 miles per litre is a good allround average for the 1100/1150GS.

You can get 50ish but even when ridden harder they shouldn't drop too much.

Appreciate the comments and advice, very helpful all, will look into what you say trangwales especially relating to the catalytic and the air filter, there must be plenty on this available here on the forum, thanks all
Charles

Worry about it when you've got a brimmed to brimmed distance ridden and fuel used. My gauge doesn't start to move until almost half the tank has gone and there's the full fuel-light reserve once it shows empty, so during the time it moves it moves pretty quickly (since that covers around 100 miles of a 230 mile range).

I ride mine pretty hard and find that the fuel light normally comes on at about 150-160 miles so I fill up within the next 20 miles. 02 r1150gs.

Almost exactly the same (Hong Kong is KM and KM/H) ... 340 km between fill ups ...

Riding in London in 2nd and 3rd most of the time will bring up around 7 or 8 miles to the litre. Thats around 200 miles on the adventure tank and 130ish on the standard if you run well past the fuel light.

The fuel warning light on mine really does come on around the 4-5 litres left mark. Three bars on the fuel guage on the RID seems to come in around 10 litres left, with the light coming on with one bar left. I must admit I've never run it to empty to be sure, just basing this on what it takes to refuel to the same point.

I get about half, maybe 1/3 of a tank riding from aunt mabels to work. Always wondered if that is good or not. :aidan

why?

Fill to brim, carry an extra litre or 2 in a pannier, set the trip to 0 on yer speedo and ride it on a sunday at your normal pace till there's no petrol in it. then you will know what the fuel consumption is before going and changing anything....:comfort

the better running the bike the better fuel efficiency, ie valves properly done (i may be wrong:P)..no need to change filters and catalytic converters just yet..:rob

That's weird. I used to use a quarter of a tank going from your aunt mabel's to work. Do you think we might have gone a different way? Or is it because we work in different places?

Or has your aunt mabel been nicking your fuel while you are parked up?

Refuelled my '02 R1150GSA yesterday and got about 33 mpg. Best mileage at summer was around 47 mpg.

I was similarly unimpressed when i first got my 1150.Hard work to get over 40MPG.Replaced cat with Y piece, now returns about 50MPG.
Take panniers off, check when air filter was last changed and have it serviced properly.

I tried going the short way, but it's a longer distance.

If i go from a bit to the north of newdigate to just west of Overington it's about a 3/4 of a tank, maybe a bit less if i'm using the medium sized tank, could be a bit more if the xx large tank. .

Oil!!

Surely the MPG is directly linked to oil viscosity?
The more viscous the oil the more resistence offered to the pistons, therefore the more miles per gallon used, as the engine works harder to push the pistons around.....??? :D

So if I drain all the oil out will I be able to get to Steptoes aunt Mabel's on less than a gallon of petrol????????????
