I have just noticed over the last couple of weeks i have (well the bike 1100GS) developed a fuel drip from the overflow.. even with low fuel levels, could this be a tank breather problem

I'd definitely be getting that tank emptied and off and take the fuel pump plate off

What is probably happening is that the fuel filler drain is cracking or porous and letting fuel thru or the pipe clamp is loose

OR the breather thing has fallen off it's mount and is allowing fuel thru it's mechanism

It's not difficult just clean the threads on the pump flange nuts and studs well and get plenty of penetrating oil NOT WD40 on them

Once you lift the flange you will see the breather drain hoses and you need to unclip these before you lift the flange too high

Tips

No more than a gallon of fuel in the tank

Get an old tyre to set the tank "lobe" into and use that to balance and protect the tank in so you are working on a flat surace

Clean the threads and nuts well and use 3 in 1 or similar penetrant and be gentle when you start undoing them if they are tight more wire brushing and penetrant

Don;t just haul the pump flange out! work it gently there is a level float you have to wiggle out too

Check the date on the fuel filter It may well be overdue a change

If you need to re-position the breather thingy you will need to take out the filler cap make sure and order a new O ring for there they ALWAYS swell once the air is at them Or if you are handy with a good clean stanley and superglue you can take a wee length out and glue it back together agaiin

If you sit the big O ring on top of a hot kettle for an hour it will shrink back :thumb

Yup :thumb

Or a bit of lubrication and manipulation (ooh 'er missus) will usually get them to squidge back into their groove.

Thanks for the advice guys, looks like a little surgery then :D At least the timing is good (for a change) -9 and Snow. So the GS is off the road until spring :thumb2

Take a kettle out to the garage, and any time you're trying to put a rubber pipe over a spigot, or route a pipe or whatever, dump it in hot water first :thumb2

I managed to split a pipe several times, gauge my knuckles and shock the neighbours with my language when I was trying to do similar without the hot water :blast
