Fuel filler cap issues on 2016 GSA with keyless...

Don’t forget

Had it = didn’t like it

I had it on my Multi, and several cars, don’t see it as an extra worth £237, or whatever it is now.

Came standard on my Exclusive, never wanted it but actually I am beginning to like it

I find it makes life easier filling up but the thing I don’t like is the number of times I go out to the garage to do something to the bike then find I need to move the bike but can’t take the steering lock off but the main key is in my bike coat

I do have a unchipped key to use with the panniers and gps which only cost £22

Where did you get your un chipped key, my dealer quoted £51+vat for one.

Vines of Guildford although quoted the same price from Bahnstormer

Part number should be: 51 2025 207 20688 20674, just checked the invoice and it says C51.25.7.688.674. So one of those numbers should work just make sure its for a non chipped key!

Takes under a week but you will have to prove the bike is yours

I have keyless ignition and quite like it for everyday use.

BUT

I usually go on a couple of European tours a year. On all my previous bikes I have taken on tour I hid my second key somewhere obscure on the bike.....just in case.

Can't do this with the GS because:-

1 if I hid a spare key on the bike the dam thing would start

2 BMW only give you one key unless you count that cheap piece of black plastic that masquerades for a key

Mike

With respect Mike, you need to read the manual. As pointed out above, the plastic key can start the bike, but it needs to be physically placed against a hidden transponder point to do so. It's easier to hide than a full spare key if that's what you want to do.

Like others, I have a £20 spare metal dumb key for the panniers, etc, so I really can't lose my ignition key... unless I set off without my trousers!

I don't think I explained my point of view very well.

I have read the manual and am fully aware how to start the bike using the plastic key under the rear mudguard and have an unchipped key for unlocking the sat nav bracket and seat (don't like BMW luggage so not needed there).

If all this technology is a good think why is the only back up a piece of coded plastic that you have to put under the rear mudguard to start the bike and then buy a non coded key to use in the locks because you don't trust the plastic one to be substantial enough to open all the locks whist on tour?

It all really boils down to cost. I suppose if a second 'full' key was provided it could carried by a friend or hidden on the bike with the battery removed (especially if you have also bought a 'dummy key!:augie:blast)

I really want to have 2 proper keys with my GS like I've had on ALL my 50+ bikes I've had in almost 50 years of riding

We have had an unchiipped key so the wife can access the panniers.

Keyless..
luv it..
keep key in the small little front right pocket of my Kevlar jeans..
taped little plastic spare to underside of tank panel, DO practise using it as it’s VERY location specific to enable ignition..
Got a spare non transponder (£20) cut from Bmw vin specific but had to supply log book as proof of ownership as didn’t get from supplying dealer.

All in all I can’t think of a better system, especially as I’ve been known to leave the key (won’t start bike anyway) hanging from the top box overnight.
I’m sure I’m not alone..

I was enquiring about a new RT at Oxford Motorrad last weekend. I said I specifically did not want keyless and the salesman said there was no choice. Don't know if he was right or not, but that's what he said.

The demos I rode all had keys - do the dealers know something we don't? We heard about another car (keyless) stolen from a member of staff over the weekend from their driveway while in bed. Why are we persisting with this madness?

The plastic coded key I am lead to believe is made this way so you can keep it in your wallet in case you loose or break you other one ....

Unchipped Key

Try this

keysinthepost.com

Take a photo of your key, email it to them.

Can't find the price right now but I'm sure it was less than £25.

But what's the point when an OEM key from your dealer, supplied cut for your bike using your vin, is also less than 25 quid?

Couldn’t open my fuel cap yesterday......2017 gsa t.black....ignition off....ignition on....off....on....off...on..off......look like a complete tit.....ign offf and on till eventually it let me in. Pulled up at ferry a few weeks ago....lights wouldn’t go off.....ign on...off...on...off........ eventually they went off........ beginning to feel unsure about these bloody electronic bikes....

And so, it’s happened to me also. Cant open the filler cap. Ignition on and off cycles, still mo joy. Enough juice to get to the dealers for the bike’s service next week, but range bound untill then.

Weird. Tried the cap whilst the ignition was on and (as it should be) off a number of times yesterday, and twice this morning. Just got back from an afternoon ride and now it works.
