Went to fill bike up other day and when I opened fuel filler cap there was water laying in the rim around filler there appears to be a small hole is this for draining away the water or is it for something else?

yep.....had the same problem with mine while under warranty, took it back to the dealer and they blew it out, once clear I regularly give a good squirt of wd40 down it as it can corrode.

The drain hose for the lid drain is one of the smaller rubber pipes on the R/H side of the bike just back from the tank.
Blow it through ( with the fuel cap open
) but gently, not with the full force of an airline. Otherwise you can blow the hose off the inside of the tank and lose your fuel

Further to Steptoe's reply mine was so blocked compressed air wouldn't do the job so I had to rod it by removing the filler from the tank and carefully pulling the pipe from the plate before shoving some copper cable down to remove the crud

Now every so often either squirt WD40 down the hole or drip some other light oil down it...

Dont know what it is called in the UK, but that nylon monofilament they use on Lawn Edge trimmers "weedeaters" works great as a 'rodder" with some WD40 etc

i opened my tank to find water in the lip, tried the blow down the pipe with pressure (at the output end of the tubing) , tried the rod idea (using trimmer wire) played for hours trying to sort it out, tried a big syringe blowing & vacum on the pipe , cant get it to work. any ideas ???
i took the top bolts out & saw the pipe inside but its a crimp connector so I was worried about putting the pipe on afterwards so closed it back up,

I'm sure you'll get an answer before long. but in the meantime it might be a good idea when you next fill up to dose the tank with 'wynns dry fuel' this will get rid of any water thats in the tank - seems likely you will have some in there if the drain hose is blocked.

I fixed mine at the gotc. Used some small electic cable. Twist it as you push it down. Leave some copper strands exposped as bristles. Then blow it through.

Mine took a lot of faffing with various improvised rodding 'implements' but it cleared in the end.
+1 on the 'Dry Fuel' mine was running a bit rough after I'd discovered the blocked water drain - dry fuel helped.

panic over , got up this morning with a clear head &took the filler ring out the tank blew it clear , all sorted but had to put it back with the o-ring being a bit big , i think its in place ok but will order a new one & pop it in over the next few days just for peace of mind.

Glad you got it sorted
No need to buy a new o-ring (unless its damaged) just leave it overnight somewhere warm and it'll shrink back to size.

Not that I have this problem, but I just soooooooooooooooooooooo couldn't stop myself from checking, by spraying with WD40 and blowing through from below.

had a look on motorworks but not sure if I am looking at the o-ring for the filler or the one that fits in the side where the pump or whatever it is lives

I just sat the O ring on the kettle for an hour, is shrank back to size

Great thread....I was wondering why some rust was starting to form in the recessed flange under the fuel filler cap. I assume my drain is plugged etc.
On another related note, my maintenance kit included a new O ring for the filler cap.
The exploded views or manual isn't clear enough (for me) on what's involved. Is it just a case of removing the torx screws, removing the cap, then the flat flange and then just remove and replace the O-ring? 5 minute job? no fear of anything falling into the tank when the torx screws are removed?

Hi Ron, The O ring in your service kit is probably for the fuel pump plate, though its quite possibly the same size as the filler neck one, its not a problem if the original one has just "grown" due to absorbing hydrocarbons, just leave it in a warm place for a while and it will shrink, the other item you might need to sort the drain problem out are some small fuel line clips, the blockage is most likely to be in the steel pipe stub that is part of the filler cap, on to this is clipped a small bore rubber pipe, the clips are not re-usable, to check the size of clips needed just check the two rubber drain/vent pipes that run near the tank holding bolt on the right side, they are the same pipe.

I have never ever had to replace a filler cap O ring.
Lots of grease, push down hard and twist back and forth on the inner flat flange and the O ring pops into place.
But if your the type that takes hours over a job then the O ring may expand rather more than i've experienced. So don't fanny around for too long with the O ring out.
