Fuel Filter.. at 24k replacement

What are the collective opinions on changing the fuel filter on the R1150GS at 24k miles.. ??
It is apparently an "option".. my bike is presently in for the 24k.. (X-reg..2000yr) ..

So.. do I leave..? or have it changed??

I dont know the nature of the construction of it.. but I do know it is situated within the fuel tank. not sure if it is pre-pump or post-pump.. so.. how critical is it and how long to they last??

It's a service schedule. if using crap fuel in far away places it's even suggested changing at 12K miles

Just changed mine for its 24k service its reasonably straight forward. Ran the tank right down took it off and set it upside down on some bubble wrap covered in an old flannal sheet and propped the sides with a couple of old plastic containers I had in the garage. Bit fiddly getting the breather lines on and off. Took about 40mins reckon it'd be quicker the next time. Bought a spare seal but don't reckon I needed it.

Unlike the post above I had an absolute nightmare changing mine. I did it because my fuel level readout on the RID had gone up the swany.

It took me about three friggin hours to get the fuel lines back on and thats with bining the originals and going and buying some stainless steel Jubilee clips.

I did it in the end but with lots of rattles and toys kicked down the road.

Steptoe.. Blue bell said it was an "option".. ie recommended by BMW but not on actually a "must do" on the service. So not sure whether too or not. Not knowing its construction as well, makes me a little unsure if it will be last etc..

Fanum.. I can see the sence in your option.. however is the original filter situated in advance of the fuel pump.. and if it is.. is your external option post/after the fuel pump. I am considering doing the same.. but not sure if the fuel pump is likly to suffer if the filter is post/after..

I'm on 33k, been meaning to change it for the last 8k miles.

The fuel pump is working harder when the tank is low (on reserve) so I'm under the presumption it's needing a change and will be doing asap.

Mine was changed at 24k and although a a bit fiddly was worth the effort as I cut open the old one to see what state it was in...a bit on the gungy side.

Still meaning to route it on the outside but haven't got round to it. Maybe at the next service (48k).

How can the filter be in advance of the pump - it sucks not pumps,if you know what i mean.

The filter is downstream of the pump, same location in the scheme of things as fanums ( and mine, also in the same place).

Why are you taking the breather lines off ?? no need to . You only have to get to the filter, which you can do as the pump hangs out of the tank

Cos on Mine the breather lines were short and I couldn't quite get good access to the tank side filter connector. With the breather lines off I could change the filter at the bench.

Bill, how do you do this then? Has this mod been documented at all and is it available on the forum somewhere - if not it would be a good one to write up and make available.

I've got an idiots guide step by step how to change your fuel filter in an MS word doc complete with pictures. Written by an idiot (me) for other idiots (you) if you want to try this yourself sometime.
It's too big to post here but if anyone can shrink it or host it somewhere I'd be happy to share it . PM me with your email address for a copy .

I changed mine for the first time at about 80,000km - never noticed a problem before changing it or after so I reckon I'll leave it for a good while before I touch it again.

I did mine recently for the first time
I brought the filter from the dealer, along with new proper clamps and new big rubber seal.
I may have been lucky but i did not have any problems.
I have and ADV so didnt have the hassle with the external fuel pipes.
Its always interesting when taking the old filter off is to empty it out onto some white cloth and see all the you know what come out.
If nothing else it gives you peace of mind
