The tank is lying on its side, fuel is everywhere. I've got the round bit off but have been stumped by BMW's bloody clips. Why could they not use the suzuki/honda ones? How the hell do I get 'em off?

Gone in for a beer. Await your answers before I go back to it.

Snoop.

According to the manual
Removing and installing fuel filter
• Release hose clips at fuel filter (4).
Caution:
Note correct direction of flow through fuel filter.
• Remove/install fuel filter.
• Secure non-reusable hose clips with pliers,
BMW No. 13 1 500.
My recomendation get them off swap them for Jubilee clips!

I cut the clips off using either a junior hack saw or pliars

Yeah, some of the plonkers on this board said "you only need a filter and seal".

In real terms you don't need to replace the seal (says BMW dealer) AND you need new locking nuts and proper suzuki/honda style clips.

I had to leave mine without for now until I get some from the shops. I wish people would be honest and not bullshit over what is required to do the job properly.

I think that the advice of getting a new seal is because they can expand a little in petrol but shrink back to size if left for a while.
As far as the clips go I think it is the case that it might be obvious to some so they don't mention it.
If I am doing a job on my home I always start off by going to B+Q to get the bits. When I have started the job I go back to get all the bits I really needed. :)
Good Luck

For a start why is there petrol all over the place??? You could have run the tank down until there was less than a couple of litres in it or drained it via the QD connectors. I'd say the nuts that hold the unit in would be OK to reuse (I reused mine) if you were worried that they might unscrew you could put a dab of blue loctite on them the workshop manual makes no mention of replacing the nuts. As for the clips. Those on my bike had a little loop of metal above the clip. I prised this open a bit with a small flat bladed screwdriver and popped it over the flange on the filter and squeezed the clips back into place with pliers when the filter was replaced.....as per the manual. So original clips and nuts easily reused. If you start a job and find it too difficult, learn from it don't bleat that other people are bullshitting when they are not.......it just makes you look like a hamfisted pratt.

The clips are non-reusable as someone has already stated, so you havn't done the job properly. I tried screwdrivering mine but to no avail (the gab was too close). I do not have a workshop manual - I was following the example found in Links and some UKGSER posts.

Snoopy.....when somebody posts a 'how to' thread, they usually assume a degree of mechanical competance.......I would respectfully suggest that if you're the sort of person who can't deal with things like the BWM pinched clips on fuel lines, the sort of person who doesn't have a couple of assorted sized jubilee clips lying around as a matter of course and the sort of person who can't use a bit of common sense when working on basic jobs, then you shouldn't be attempring them ;)

any small piece of wire can be twisted using pliers to form a tube clip.

in motorsports and aircraft engineering its called lockwiring - just a fancy name for it. ( with regs etc )

even a ty-rap would do the job at a push.

yeah - ok - you're 'supposed' to use BMW clips - but jubilee type clips works - so that means other methods work too.

open your mind a bit and think laterally :thumb

Now why doesn't it surprise me that you've had to say that :D :D

Fanum: As I'm lodgering down London I had to leave the garage behind. I just wanted to know what I'd need to get the job done. No-where did it say anything about having to need extra clips: I don't have anything here that could do the job. :mmmm

Did you ever think of doing a search for a link to download a copy of the BMW manual? Maybe phoning your local dealer and asking them?

Either of those would have mentioned replacing the current clips with reusable ones.

You'll know for next time ;)

Snoops.. I had the same problem with the clips. Luckily there was a hardware store down the road and I went a replaced the clips with stainless Jubille clips. I didn't see your post otherwise I would have suggested getting some.

However I did say this in an earlier post on this section.

Hope you've got it sorted now though  :)

Have a look at post number 7

and looking back at the thread you posted on it you plonker :D

I've always re-used the bmw clips without any problems whatsoever, on countless numbers of bikes.

It's not rocket science ( thats why i can do it).

This general unpreperedness and confusion seems to be a re-occurring habit of yours  :D

Hope you get the "round bit" back in place without to much trouble. If your going to use hose clips, mind they don't catch the fuel level sender unit when it's all back in place - it'll give you the wrong, or no fuel reading ;)
