Hi,
I have just fitted a new front brake switch and while I had the tank off I thought that I'd put a new fuel filter on :blast

I did so with no apparent problems - but when I filled the tank up at the petrol station a steady stream of petrol poured down one of the breather tubes. There is no signs of a leak at the O ring.

I rode home, wishing I had asbestos underpants on and I have removed the tank (they're quite heavy when full!) so the leak has stopped for now.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what could be causing this?

Many thanks in advance,

DA

Fecking breather hose clips :spitfire

Any top tips on how to get the *@&%ing things back on?

Leak

Your breather pipe has come off the fuel pump pate when you changed the filter. Use jublee clips or see if you can get some re-useable clips with a nut and bolt from your local friendly BMW dealer or motor spares shop.

You really have no need to disconnect any the breather or overflow hoses. :blast

Just undo the fuel pump housing pull it out of the tank and let it hang there, you have enough slack to change the filter without removing/undoing anything.

Thats what I did but unbeknown to me (check it next time) the bloody breather hose came off!. Only found out when I filled it up! quick cable tie around the breather stopped total loss of fuel! also upset me, all that money wasted and it was cheaper then!!.

Well I think (and hope and pray) that the problem is sorted. As ever, what should have been a half hour job ended up taking all day :spitfire

It took me ages to find someone who sells hose clamps the correct size - the BMW dealer told me that there were none in the country and if I wanted the original type they would have to be ordered from Germany.

I put the clamps on, reassembled the pump, put the tank back on and the drip started in the other hose :spitfire so off came the tank, checked everything, nipped the clamps up a bit more and put it all back together. The drip swapped back again! :blast

It turns out that both of the breather hoses had small cracks in that were only visible when the hose was stretched. The drip from the breather hoses was one drop every three seconds, but that's not the point, I wanted it sorted!

So what have I learned from this week's escapades?

1. If you've done a job don't think "Oh, while I've got the tank off I could do..." Stop while you are ahead.

2. Spouts will come off petrol cans at the worst time possible

3. It is only when you have used you last 'one use only' hose clamp you will realise that you have clamped the O ring in between the breather hoses.

It's time to go for a long walk to get the petrol fumes out of my lungs!

with you all the way on that :thumb2

you just took a step up the never ending hill of wisdom

people like Steptoe are on oxygen by now.......

Got my Jubilee clips from HalFrauds -no problems -they worked fine 11 or 12mm from memory. Got a box of ten for c.£3.
Dump those 'orrible BMW clamps -a nightmare to remove, and almost impossible to put back, especially if it's a roadside breakdown. I speak from personal experience !!!!

Fuel pumps.

The man above knows belive me he knows (also knows how to run out of petrol on a demo run!!!).

I intend to start a campaign for at least one filling station on the southbound section of the A1 north of Peterborough.....it could have happened to anyone, it's just that I was on a test run on an 800GS, and the "miles remaining" indicator lied ....it said 5 miles left, and promptly stopped.
Could happen to anyone ....:mad::mad::mad:
Balderstons got their demo bike back about an hour late, but were very good about it....at least I didn't wreck it having so much fun on the bends !!!!
Nice little bike ....

Was the leak from the clamps on the outside of the tank, on the right hand side, or from a clamp inside the tank? I had the fuel filter changed and later found a leak from one of the clamps when starting the bike from cold, but seemed to stop after a short time. I tightened the offending clamp and it was fine for a while, when I had to re-tighten it. No leaks just now, but I keep a look out. If I replace with jubilee clips what is the correct size to use?

Clamp

The clamps that caused the grief were the ones on the inside of the tank, holding the breather hoses onto the metal plate housing the fuel pump.

The clamps outside of the tank appear good, although there is still the slightest dribble of fuel from the yellow/black breather. It's not enough to cause a drip while I'm watching (but I do get bored easily!) but there is small damp patch on the garage floor underneath the pipe.

I'm wondering if the pipes inside the tank have degraded. Does anyone know how easy the pipes inside the tank are to replace?

I've no idea what size the clamps are - other than too small for most people to stock!

Hope this helps,

DA

Breather pipes

I put my brether pipes on with cable ties theres no presssure in the breathers at all so no probs doing this, Mine have been like it for a long tkme no probs at all but DON'T use them on the other pipes as these are pressurised.

For the breather pipe, and the roll-over pipe, where they attach to the big round flange that holds filter and pump, there is very little space between the pipes to actually fit a jubilee clip , so I used cable ties. There is no pressure on either of these pipes they just allow air to enter the tank to replace used fuel, and the other, to allow excess fuel from overfilling, or rainwater under the filler cap, to drain away. Hence, no pressure ( as oppsed to fuel lines/pump/filter, which do run under pressure), so cable ties should be sufficient just to prevent either pipe from become loose or dislodged.

Believe me, I had to replace my Bulgarian (non-BMW) fuel pump this weekend as it packed up ...****** it !!!

Fuel pump

Take it back to the nice man in Bulgaria get your money back! possibly never hear from you again!
( Roger now sleeps with the fishes!)

Not the same pipes as mine then. These are two pipes that run in parallel, and are definitely pressurised.

Sethmopp, they're talking about completely different pipes. Don't confuse yourself.
