Fuel gauge display

This might be a stupid question but my 2004 gs the top half of the fuel gauge is solid black and comes off in one go and the bottom half is small segments which come down a bit at a time .So is this right the you do half the tank and the gauge reads from full to half in one go and half to empty in segments

Yup. I get about 100miles before the gauge changes, Another 40-50 and it wants filling.
