Your right of course but the ECU knows how much fuel it is putting into the engine at all times so in theory an accurate range should be obtainable. Trouble is that if the Fuel level is wrong then it will either not know where it was filled to accurately or think fuel has been removed. In short if you have a duff fuel strip then the range will never be accurate because its simply impossible. Its a computers guess based on the information it has and as ever with computers garbage in garbage out. What should be reasonably accurate assuming you reset it often is the average MPG figures. Although remember it is an average not a live figure so if you never zero it then your getting an average of whatever miles you have done since it was zeroed be that 10 or 10000.
