Fuel gauge gone again to day, 2010 GSA

I called into my dealer today to winge about my fuel strip having failed again and asking for goodwill assist from wmb to be advised "looks like USA is getting replacement fuel strip fitted as upgrade and not recall.

I've been advised to keep in touch as may happen here or ........ have I just been fobbed off !

Dealer told me of new RT with less than 600 miles on the clock that was showing range of 100+ miles that ran out of fuel in fast lane of M1 rider (and bike) made it to the hard shoulder just. Safety issue or what?

Magnon

It is a safety issue and not just because of the above, IMHO the warning hazard triangle lit up on the dash, is a distraction, it distracts you not just because it is there all the time and should not be, but also because if anything else is going wrong how the hell are you supposed to know/react, so you find yourself looking down and trying to read the flashing words and see if they are different from the fuel warning words  joking aside its feking shyte:(

Stretch :rob

Not sure if mine's just gone...

Picked the bike up from the dealer yesterday, it's now on 220 miles (range says 194 miles remaining) and still says 1/2 tank... (has done for the past 40-ish miles)... It did say 2 bars above empty last night when I checked (bike was on its side stand when I turned the ignition on though, but today, regardless if upright or on the side stand it's now saying half. I've not filled it up yet either, still on the full tank of fuel from when bought...

2010 30th Edition... And only 1 day old...

I picked up my GSA 30th Year in July and immediately noticed that my fuel gauge was behaving erratically. After a few fill-ups I noticed that the fuel gauge only works properly if you fill up to the full or near. Once I put in 5l and the gauge remained unchanged in terms of range! My former 07 GSA was absolutely spot-on in terms of range and bars on every fill up with any amount of fuel put in! I don't understand why the 2010 gauge is not like my old 07 GSA.:nenau However, I always use my tripmeter as range between fill-ups to be on the safe side! As a matter of interest, my old 07 GSA has been reasonably trouble-free for 42 months and 24,000 miles apart from one failed fuel pump (replaced under warranty), one blown headlight bulb and leaky final drive seal when I part-exchanged for the 2010 GSA.

Well will have to get used to it :blast dealer says that when my fourth one goes in, in a weeks time ,it won't cure it, I'll just have to sit back until it goes again:mad: "THEY" apparantly are working on a fix for it :nenau and fitting existing new parts will not cure it.

well 3 months old and my GSA ran out of fuel again today for the second time in a fortnight on the mway in the rush hour. Off to the dealers in the morning who said " we'll take a look"...yeh right be hard to find with the bike shoved up his a**e.

I'll make sure they replace and not recalibrate the gauge....do I get a badge now I've joined the club :D

Now fixed...allegedly :)

Here we go....

I REALLY didn't want to join this club but I was on my way back from Cotswold Motorrad yesterday on my 2010 GSA after having had my Spot switch replaced for the second time :augie when I noticed the "Range" dropping like a stone. From a range of 220 miles when I left the dealers the warning triangle came on fifteen miles down the road. As I was on the M5 I bottled out and ran for a fuel station - where I just managed to squeeze £14 in - arse! I still had 2/3rds of a tank left!

This is a safety issue as I was getting distracted from playing with the traffic. :D

I never had this issue with my 2007 GSA - every other feckin thing went wrong but the fuel gauge was great....!

I'll get onto the dealer asap but I wonder if I'll get the same experience as others who have posted on this thread.:drool

Watch this space....

My 2010 GSA also had the misfortune of joining this esteemed club (for the first time - circa 3.5k miles) just before Christmas, most annoying!

Do you think BMW would tolerate this type of implicit fault if it impacted new car sales in equivalent numbers?? I suspect not.... :augie

I always manage to get an extra 100 miles worth if I put the bike on the sidestand, once the tank is half empty. Beats the VAT increase.:JB

Yep, mines gone again....my 2008 GS isnow out of warranty....Vines Guildford immediatley offered to replace the parts free and pay half the labour....leaving me with a bill of £60. I guess I should be happy with this but feel this well known issue should be fixed for free. Clearly BMW have issued instructions to dealers rather than sort the issue out. Interestingly I asked how long it would take to fix....I was told an hour and could wait. When I challenged that this equated to a hourly labour rate of £120!!!! and enquired whether they employed heart surgeons in their workshop the labour was waived completely. Vines also said that many people do not suffer from this issue....I have two other mates with GSs....both have the same issue...go figure.

As I said, I should be gratefull it is being sorted "free" but this leaves a bad taste in the mouth....BMW have clearly got this wrong and need to sort it.

What with this and playing Russian roulette with the FD I am starting to wish I had listened to those who told me to keep the 1150.

I'm not paying to fit a replacement as that all evidence suggests will just fail... wmb they won't pay so I'm using trip meter.

Agree, if this was costing me anything I probably wouldn't have it done.

im on my 4th 1200,3 of those adv, never had a fuel guage issue,or fpc or ring antena for that matter,

mind you had plenty or other stuff go:D

So, your bike is out of warranty and you've had a fuel guage go again. Your dealer will repair for free and you are still moaning:nenau I reckon that's a result because if it goes agan, they will probably offer the same :thumb

FFS, it's hardly the end of the world.

Try taking a Trumpet or Jap machine back after it's run out of warranty:eek:

A tad harsh....and I think missing the point. I am "moaning" about a £12K motorcycle where there is a known problem that the mighty BMW seem reluctant to fix. My pal with a 2007 model is not so lucky....it will cost him the best part of £200 to get sorted.

Yes we can (and I have) use the trip....probably more accurate anyway...but not really the point. When you come to sell you will either have to get sorted or knock of the price....either way you end up paying for a faulty piece of engineering.

I would add that Vines Guildford, as ever, have offered great service for which I am grateful.

How many of us are car drivers? The magority I would think, and how many times have you had the fuel gauge replaced on your car? I can't ever remember having one changed, irrespective of how much the car cost, and most of the gauges were fairly accurate.

When I fill up the 33 litre tank on my 2010 GSA the range (5 minutes later)tells me that I have 450 miles in the tank. The mpg monitor tells me I'm doing 49 mpg. To do 450 miles at 49mpg, I would need 9.2 gallons or 42 litres; OR; If I can do 450 miles on 33 litres, the bike would be doing 62 mpg. I've paid £14k for a bike with fuel monitoring - I think the least BMW can do is to get it right!
