Hi

Just how accurate is the fuel gauge ? , and whats considered an average range from a full tank ( Std 1200 GS )
The gauge indicates full for ages, approx 100 miles on trip then shows 1 Bar ( ie nearly empty ) by 130miles. ( A bit off putting when in the middle of nowhere ) Anyone else experienced this ?

Can it be adjusted by dealer ( 1st service due soon ) or is it replacement float/sensor ?

A Worried Tosser from Hungerford :(

Sounds normal'ish to me - you get used to it, it's only a rough guide anyway.

To be honest I never really look at it because I have learnt that a full tank on my standard 1200GS gives between 180 and 190 miles until the 50 mile countdown begins. I always set one of the trips after a fill up so always know how much fuel I have.

First Service

Hi Harry,

The fuel gauge is a bit hit and miss. I've had my 1200 a month and done about a1000 miles. I have done about 200 miles at best on a tank of 20.5 litres, which is not far off empty. The gauge was showing only 6 miles of range left. i thought the gauge was a bit naff in the first 600 miles like yours. I asked Park Lane to check it at the first service. THey recalibrated it on their computer thingy and it is now better IMO. You can give it a go. The gauge is no good over short distances and in traffic as your riding style affects the reading. All bikes are like that I think.

There is more info on this topic from more informed people than me. Try using the search facility.

I always reckoned on 200 miles to a tank and i ran out at 220 ish twice:(

Guage is pretty good on the GSA i have now, and the DTE/range function is very accurate:thumb

Hi

Thanks guys, I'll stick to 'tripping' the miles for now and start looking for
fuel at 150 ish miles. Seem to be getting about 10 miles/litre

Will request a re calibration at 1st Service.

( Can't wait to finish the running in bit mind you it revs really quite freely now )

Thanks once again

Only done 650 miles on mine, still running her in, but already reckon the fuel countdown is pessimistic. If you're travelling at a steady rate of knots and not giving it big licks I reckon there's a good 2lts and a bit left. Twice I've filled up and could only get 17 to 18 lts in the tank. BTW can anyone fill that tank easily :nenau

Always set the trip when i fill up. On average i get about 220 miles before i get the 50 miles to go indication. Riding carefully, gently accelerating(and cruising at 75-80 mph) and gentle use of the brakes i routinely get 260 miles before i fill up. Never had to put more than 18.5 litres in. I reckon with more considerate riding i could get close to 300 miles out of a tank. Have noticed that the system panniers when fitted, knock about 20% of the tank range though. They act like airbrakes, especially when fully deployed/expanded.

Take the rubber bung out and do the tank mod. Lets the air out quicker and you can get an extra 3 ltrs in. :thumb2http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23544

I've found mine to be pretty accurate and consistent in the time I've had it. Shows "full" until between 90 miles and a best of 131 miles before dropping to 1/2 full. The bars then disappear at regular intervals but the last seems to last for a good 50-75 before the reserve shows. I regularly get 200+ miles to tank without even worrying about running out. I do however always use the trip meter and not the fuel gauge as the time to fill up.

Sounds like a problem with the sensor in the tank. Let your dealer know before your 1st service and he`ll replace it no problem. Don`t be put off by the dealer or other folk saying they are all like that, they are not!!

Had the same issue on mine last year and it`s now deadly accurate!!

For a double check, go on a good run, ride as you normally do and take a gallon can of petrol with you. Check the mileage when you run out then you will know what YOUR bike does!! Each bike and riding style is different.:thumb

Fuel gauge packed in

Normally get about 170ish miles to a tank (1200GS, not GSA). Always set the trip at fillup and always fill all the way. I got caught out with an inaccurate sender on a previous BMW (ran out with a third still showing), and the sender on my current bike (2004, 30,000 miles) has just packed in completely. Now shows empty all the time.
