Fuel Gauge

Had my first service done at SPC and the fuel gauge seems nearly/not quite/almost but definetly not accurate. Before the service it dropped from full to the yellow light on but on the way home it dropped to half and then a slow progression down even though I have done only 100 miles (on full tank ) now it is on a third should be half. Sorry I got carried away and I was getting excited for nothing, although a vast improvement for a £10000 bike still abysmal. Seems a lot smoother.

Hi Oz...good to meet you today, hope you managed to dodge the blizzards on the way back!?! Look forward to catching up again when you make it across the Solent!

My fuel indicator plays strange games too - from other threads it seems that a lot of them do! Mine switches from full to half when I've done about 120 miles after refuelling, then works down progressively until the reserve warning comes on at about 150 miles.

I agree totally, it's a pain on a £10k bike - you'd think BMW could have sorted it....that said, I've got used to it now and find it predictably (in!)consistent, when used in conjunction with resetting the trip when I refill.

Cheers, Tony

Same as mine and seems as accurate and as logical as any other fuel guage I've used. Can't see what all the moanings about.

There are no graduations above half-full on the guage - it will always show completely full or, once below halfway, will move in a graduated fashion.

Apparently this is because of the difficulty getting an accurate reading from a full tank (fuel sloshing side to side etc). Therefore the top half of the guage is just a solid bar.

Mine goes from the full block to halfway at about 130 miles, and then decreases gradually after that until I get a warning light at about 180-190 miles. I'll then go to 230 or so before hitting the final little graduation (the "fill up now you twat" line).

I've done the "must do fuel tank mod" by the way - drilling a couple of holes in the top of the filler neck to enable more fuel to be put in.

Fuel Tank mod

I've heard a lot about this fuel tank mod. What is it and how do you do it. Does it invalidate your warranty at all? How much more fuel can you get into the tank having done it?

I didn't bother refitting mine - just pop out the rubber tube from the filler neck and that helps a lot.

If you want to you can drill some holes around the top of the metal part of the neck, that helps the air escape as you are filling the last bit of the tank.

I did the rubber neck removal thing first, which improved the amount of fuel you could get in and stopped it spurting out all over you as the tank became full.

However, doing the hole drilling thing made a significant further improvement and gained about 20-25 miles per tank, so well worth doing. Tank fills much quicker too. It took me 15 mins to carry out the work.

I've done the tank mod and got 22ltr into the tank a couple of weeks back after about 200miles of solid town work. Don't know what that'd translate to on the open road, but it seams you get an extra half gallon, which as tobers says is good for 25-30miles.

Now stop going on about the fekkin gauge. It works insofar as it tells you when you're empty. Use that together with the odo and you're laughing.

To be honest, its the best guage on any bike I've ever owned.

OK GSMonkey don't get your knickers in a twist suppose its better than the 1150R as it doesn't have one. At least I think that was what i was given to go for a jolly on I was told when the yellow lights on you can do 20 miles.

Did the fuel tank mod the other night. Wasn't too much hassle and I await the results when I next get a chance to go out and ride. As for the fuel gauge. Yes it isn't 100% linear but at least it's consistantly non-linear so you know what you're getting. It's also better than other bikes' gauges that I've had in the past too.
