Fuel Guage [Film] Sensor

Having just picked up my GS up from having the front brake recall job done I notice that the fuel guage is wrongly issuing the usual "empty" warning with a fast reducing "range". Tank is full.
I go back to the dealer to be told this problem is unrelated to the brake job notwithstanding that removal of the tank is part of that job and is "reasonably common" for a number of BMW's including GS's and what a pity the warranty just ran out. I'm getting quoted over £200 fitted which is quite a lot for a known problem and am pushing for a "goodwill" warranty job but wondered if any of you know of this issue

Only about half the owners of 1200 GS's so yes its a common fault cured by ignoring the gauge and using the trip meter instead.

I can live with the trip but the flashing is getting on my t*ts

I heard from a dealer this morning that a 'fix' for the fuel strip is in the pipeline!!! :0)

Apparently, BMW have finally accepted that there is a problem and a new retro-fit fix is on it's way. This could be a re-call fitment or it could only affect warranty issues at the time that it is available. It's not known when it will be available yet but in the pipeline is a light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak.

If your's is just out of warranty, it might be worth having a word with another dealer, seeing as the problem is the top warranty claim issue affecting these models.

Mines just on it's way out as well, telling me I've still got 150miles range after 320miles.

I'm hoping it's covered under the extended warranty - anbody claimed for this?

Mines a bit different, the warning light came on at 47 miles and ran out of gas 10 miles later.....The only time I have run out in over forty years of motoring £200 to fix. Trip meter from now on methinks. what's the use of technology if it is so fragile?

My '07 1200GS did the same thing. Dealer told me leave it for 2 tanks of gas to see if it came back, because it needs to 'recalibrate', which typically takes quite a while

Sounded a bit like BS, but I trust the guy who told me, so I waited. At about 450 miles, in the middle of a ride, it started registering fuel again and gave about the right level and range.

I hear on the grapevine that this is such a common problem that BM are seriously considering going back to using a float-based system.
