Fuel guage reading inaccurate1150 GSA

Just got bike back from Hereford Mortorcycle Center who took absolutely ages to do a mend. Long story but don't anyone use them! They really are terrible! In the end they replaced the tank but now the fuel guage reads about 2 bars off full when I brim it. Was fine before. Don't want to go back to them, must be an easy job to adjust myself? Haven't looked to see what sort of sender or whatever it uses. Advice would be great?
 
It's from the "complex" shape of the tank inside.

On some units, fuel level sender buoy (attached on a hard wire) get's stuck on the upper part of the tank when full. I'll show accurate once the level is dropped below the level it got blocked against the wall of the tank.

Some buoys may be left blocked on the upper position (shows always almost full tank) - a good kick on the right side of the tank with your hand normally helps the buoy to drop down again ;)

I've bent the buoy supporting wire myself on many occasions to make it work correct. I play with it with empty tank rotating it 180 degrees up/down and hear where the buoy get's blocked. Easy job if you get the "feel" how the buoy moves inside the tank.
 
Mine does that too, only flickers on the top bar of the fuel gauge on the RID and spends most of its time at one bar below. It isn't as much of a problem as the other possibility that Tsiklonaut mentions, of showing full most of the time...:eek:

I had this once before and it fixed itself after a careful filling of the tank as much as possible and a run round couple of right hand bends in that state - I assume it pushed the float off whatever was blocking it.

I haven't bothered to do it this time, I'm taking the tank off in a couple of weekend's time so I'll give it a shake then.
 
If they have changed the fuel filter or removed the float assembly for any reason,check that the float isn't getting jammed and that the pump plate has been put back in the correct position.(easy to mis-align by one hole).
 
Thanks all of you. Really helpful. Will have a look at the weekend. I suspect that as it has had a new tank fitted and the float assembly has been fitted in the new tank then it is simply fouling somewhere when it reaches the 'full' postion. May need the wire supporting the bouy bending a bit. Never takent the tank off myself but beleive its easy so may do so and give a good shake first. Presumably access though is by removing the filler cap assemply and reaching in isn't it? Guess I ought to get a manual for the illustrations to help on stuff like this. Not sure what you mean by the pump plate Colban? Sorry being think I suspect.

Reading earlier postings, seems this is not an unusual problem.
 
Fuel gauge

You cannot do this through the filler cap, you will need to get the tank as empty as possible and then remove it from the bike. lay a bit of carpet in a right angle position on the floor and up the wall then lay the tank on it's left hand side and undo the nuts holding the circular plate to the side of the tank
you'll see the hoses fitted to it. Lift out this and you will see the fuel pump and filter and the tank sender. While you've got all this apart it's worth fitting a new fuel filter. But DO make sure that the tank is nearly empty before carrying out the work. If you havent got one get a manual Clymer is best, the bmw cd's are designed for factory trained mechanics and are not very detailed.

Thanks Dave. Sounds like excellent advice and very sortable. I think I know what I'm going to be doing tomorrow. Yeah I could live with it but I like things to work and if they dont it iritates me. I'm sure its just been refitted incorrectly. Convinced this is a simple mechanical fix. And I might just have to go for a long ride first to drain the tank....what a bummer! Cheers.

As a second thought if you've not got them fit some Q/D hose connectors it makes life SO much easier so whil the tank's off at low level stick'em in. (you can get them in Halfords bit cheaper than TT and the same things exactly).

The fuel gauge on my 05 1150 GSA has stopped working - no bars at all. :(

Took the tank off the new (to me) 1150GSA to replace the battery and now the fuel gauge doesn't work. The tank was almost empty when I did it (having wrestled with a full tank on the last Adv) and wasn't banged about (so hopefully, the float is OK).

Have also checked the four-wire connector block under the R/H side of the tank. Difficult to tell, but the connectors look OK. Cleaned them with emery paper and ensured that the connector was fully pushed home.

Funny thing was, the gauge WAS working just after I put the tank back - and now it isn't. :confused::confused::confused:

Any ideas? Have I missed a fuse or something stupidly simple?
