Bike seems to have developed a major fuel leak (04 1150GSA) - I have investigated and looked on here for advice - fuel seems to be coming from underneath the tank, but I can't get to the pipework so have decided to have BMW look at it. It's due a service anyway and they will pick it up on the 28th ........ The question is do you reckon I have a claim to get it repaired under warranty?? I have read about various recalls etc but I bought the bike privatley and it's an 04 ...?? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Leaks

You will probably find a hose is leaking or the seal around the fuel pump plate
down to rubber ring failing. Don't think you will get much out of BMW apart from a bill. No, whip the tank off and have a look it's not difficult and save yourself a packet.

cheers guys, I have had a look at taking the tank off, but it has 25 lts of petrol in it so feckin heavy !!! I would have drain all the fuel out etc....
If I do chose to do this, how do you I actually lift the tank/disconnect the pipework so I can see the offending area?

tank

Just take off the seat, pull off the r/h side panel (just pulls off) at the right hand side of the tank at the rear one allen screw, remove this(there's a nut on the other side of the lug so hold on to it). Lift the tank at the rear and you will see the hoses etc no need to drain it prop it up with a piece of wood
all will be revealed.

1. Remove plastic side panel front right underneath tank (where your right knee goes)
2. Undo allen bolt at rear right of tank - take care there is a nut on the inside which will drop so stick your hand in and keep a hold of it as you lossen the allen bolt - extract and put to one side.
3. Disconnect fuel pump connector - large black pultipilpe electrical connector situated a bit forward from the allen bolt you removed. Pinch the connectors and pull - it just comes out.
4. Disconnect breather hoses which run down behind the frame near the allen bolt - you'll see a point where they join - just pulle them apart
5. Disconnect fuel lines (x2) if you have the quick connectors then push in the reatiing button and wiggle them loose - do it quickly. If you don't have the quick connectors you need to clamp the fuel lines so you don't lose petrol when you undo the jubillee clips. In either case put some rags on the RH cylinder so that if you leak petrol it doesn't go all over your paint.
6. Place left had under the rear of the tank and lift a few inches - check everything is disconnected - place right hand under the front edge of the tank and pull it just a few inches backwards. It sits on 2 lugs on either side if the headstock - now lift and put to one side.

25 litres isn't that heavy .....:ymca

PS: Put your fag out first !!!

Remember that the GSA (with the 30 litre tank) has a 6mm ID balance pipe connecting the lower tank lobes.

The standard GS doesn't have this feature.

The balance pipe also has a QD 'elbow' connector on the RHS.

My balance pipe QD connector broke when I tried to undo it ('04 1150 GSA) so I now have Omega plated brass connectors with 'Viton' O-rings on all fuel lines.

Main high pressure lines are 8mm ID.

The 'K-Series' bikes seemed to suffer from QD connector failure. There was a general recall on the 'Ks' in the USA following some spectacular failures.
