I was having what could have been FPC symptoms (from what I've read on here) & as the bike came with a spare one, I bunged it on tonight. The old one was silver (quite coroded) and I know was the second one on the bike, which is a 2004 52k mile GS. The previous owner got a spare when the first let him down and left it under the seat for me. What a gent! Time will tell if I have solved the problem.

The new one was black and I think I've read on here that the newer black ones were an upgrade.

Question is, do they still fail like the old ones and should I get another as a spare? I know I could try making one of the get you home things that bypass the FPC, but the chances are I'd make a balls of it. Electrics are genuine witchcraft, in my experience.

Feel free to take the piss, or to provide useful comments, as you will

Its up to you i would make a by pass frim the old one. Iff you can fit one you can make lead

from what i know, the black ones are very much less likely to fail than the earlier silver ones.

as above - make a bypass from the old one.

I had a leter one but still caried a spare, you do see them failing on late models quite regularly - maybe not as regularly as before but...

.. for the cost / size / weight I thought I might as well carry one around even if I don't need it, then not carry one and end up on a recovery truck or losing a couple of days Holiday if it went pop on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of the Alps.

I might as well try, I suppose!

Thanks chaps....I suppose I may as well have a go at making a bypass and see if it works. As I have the connector from the old one and there's a how-to thread on here, it seems rude not to

What have I got to lose? And if it saves me the cost of buying one to keep as a spare....

I'll wait an see if my intermittent symptoms come back (oooo-er Missus) before I butcher the old one. If it was something else and not the FPC causing the problems, I can keep the old one as the spare (but I'll have to investigate other things, so it won't be good news)

Black ones are newer and better. Seem to fail a lot less but do still fail on occasion. If you're going out to the cuds, tek a spare.
