Hi , don't do a lot of posting but lots of reading, a buddy of mine has come across this on his 08 gs , fuel strip went and he only noticed it on stripping bike. Any ideas of cause and should he replace pump?

That's probably some form of ACF50 type stuff (Waxoyl??), the pump housing is plastic the only bit that corrodes is the steel locking ring and the FPC alloy body.

The fuel pump itself is a submerged roller cell pump inside the fuel tank.

Spray grease - no doubt used to keep salt at bay. Clean it with gunk or Jizer then protect it again with something - erm - greasy.

It could indeed be food ..... it does look similar to the remnants of the 14 inch deep pan pizza I had stashed diagonally in my expanded Vario pannier a few years ago :D
