Has anyone ever replaced or attempted to replace the filter in the fuel pump assembly?

Looking at photos and the parts fiche, the outlet hose from the pump itself passes into a large area of the plastic assembly before exiting ou the top via the quick release connector in the top plate.

I am assuming that this area contains some form of filtration, but I do not know if this is an element moulded into the plastic, or a more common inline type filter secreted away? If it is a special element I would like to know if it can be stripped out and fuel hose connected directy to the quick-release connector? The area in question is circled in the attached image.

The bike is coiming up on the 100K miles and as a treat I wanted to replace the fuel filter, but it is not listed as a separate part. That would mean buying a complete pump assembly for a few fundred pounds, rather than a £20 filter.

If I can get access to the tank side of that QR connector it is an easy task to put an inline FI fuel filter between the pump and that outlet.

I knwo I could just take my own pump out and attack it with Dremel/hot knife etc, but I use the bike daily , so woul dlike to get a hnadle in what needs doing first.
Anyone else very tried this?

so many questions ....

item 4 is the strainer/filter and the bit my old Haynes manual says you can clean or renew if you suspect problems, it also says it is not a service item and is not in the service schedule (if haynes is to be believed), i dont believe there is a filter anywhere else at least not on hex head GS

if you are keen to do it then maybe an in line jobbie somewhere outside the tank?

I'm fairly sure that there is a filter as well as the strainer. Most FI systems use a strainer to protect the pump from the majoirty of particulate matter that lurks in the bottom of the tank; and a finer filter downstream from the pump to protect the injectors. There is no filter after the QR connector, so I am assuming that there is something inside that area I highlighted? Its a big bit of plastic if it does nothng ...
Yes I am very keen to do it, but I do want to replace the existing element; it has been there for 100k miles, and is probably getting a bit clogged by now, having filtered over 2,000 gallons of Tesco's worst unleaded.

find an old one to try it on, or speak to a friendly dealer mech, who will know for sure, it does seem odd that theres no fine filter mentioned in the servicing sheets BMW use

That is right, BMUU do not list a replaceable item, guess it must be impossible then ...:aidan

Found some info over on advrider, with photos. It is fairly destrsuctive process to get it apart, no chance of replacing the element.

I will keep an eye out for a relatively low mileage used pump assembly and fit an inline replaceable filter between the pump and the sealed in Mann fuel filter, so it can be replaced if needed.
