Hi Folks,

Bit of a problem this morning, had travelled 30 miles to work thru pouring rain when all of a sudden the bike loses power and I coast to a halt....electrics still on but fuel pump does not prime and engine turns over but will not fire up.

I had to push the heavy lump a mile to work and left it...just been back and fuel pump still doesn't prime when I switch ignition on.

The bike (2000 1150 GS) with 82k on it, used daily, no issues leading up to this. Any pointers please, what do I need to check, thought it was water in electrics but it's had an hour to dry out (although still damp)

I will do a search later but working at present.

All (constructive) suggestions welcome please

Cheers

Did you check the fuse? :)

If the fuse is ok, get some dry contact spray in the fuel pump connection.

If that does not work, get the fuel pump out and put 12V on it for 1 second. If it does not spin, get a new one.

I installed a car fuel pump on mine, it was like 18 eur and I got 2 year warranty.

Search for 3 bar 110liter/hour car replacement ;)

Well the obvious thing would be a failed fuel pump. But the same symptoms would probably appear if you hit the kill switch or if the wiring to the kill switch was damaged or wet such that it had the same effect. Also, check the fuses - if the fuse for the Motronic goes then the bike won't run and the fuel pump won't prime. It's the 5th fuse from the left hand side of the bike.

Other than that, check the connector to the fuel tank (under right hand side of tank, behind plastic panel) because bad connections in there will stop the pump too.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Clean/reseat the 4-pin connector going to the pump.
Also worth checking the side-stand switch, bypass if needed.
Any other strange electrical probs?.Display going blank etc?.

possibly

the side stand switch or hall sensor to.

Could also be the wire loom from the ignation switch, I had this problem a couple of months ago. The loom is a bit on the short side and therefore can pull some wires out !!
Hope this helps

It's not the side stand switch because the engine is spinning when the button is pushed. It's in the first post ;)

Corroded wire

Hi Guys,

Well it turned out to be a corroded wire coming into the block connector under the plastic side panel, some of the other wires didn't look too healthy either so I've thrown the block away and connected 'em all with those crimped connector things...(can't think what they're called:nenau)

Switched ignition on and pump fired up :thumb
Thanks again for all the suggestions folks....I love this place:JB

I'm pretty sure I've tried to start mine with the sidestand down, in gear with the clutch pulled in and it turned but didn't start. Was I dreaming?

no

you weren't I've known models that spun over but did not start with the side stand down, but don't ruin his air of superiority:augie
