fuel range on computer

just bought a 2010 GSA and lovin' it but seem to have a few weird things with the on board computer.
Just after I fueled up then hit the INFO button to get fuel range, the numbers seemed pretty darn sporadic, ie : I fuelled up in Bournemouth at the wkend, and it registered 247, then after 90 mins riding had gone up to 406, then seemed to creep down.

Also average fuel mpg seems stuck on 49.5mpg

Any clues?

The trip computor gives estimated range until you are out and it will change depending on your riding style at the time. If you are bimbling about the range stays quite high and will drop slowly and if you are thrashing it, it obviously drops very quickly as your mpg falls.

When you next fill up, it remembers the last tank and how it was used so estimates it on that. It works quite well I think.

Have you zeroed your mpg since you had the bike? I find the indicated mpg stays fairly static and the longer you leave it, the less likely it is to change much because it settles on your average mpg which is pretty good by the looks of it.

Don't rely on it 100% though as it's a guide so use on of your standard trip meters as well. When you've had your bike a while, you will know the range.

This is true, and it's also a PITA - because unlike F-series bikes, the GS and GSA instrument cluster doesn't have an option to read instantaneous consumption.
I find that in the first few weeks of ownership, it's much easier to gain a realistic idea of average consumption if you can toggle between 'instantaneous' and 'average' readouts.

I've recently done a 3300 mile trip to Morocco fully loaded with panniers etc and I averaged 51.3mpg

I think they all do this, the two i have had both do it..ie av mpg never seems to change, and you fill the tank up and it takes about 30 minutes for the range to creep back up to 300 plus miles, starting out stupid low after filling up, even with a brimmed tank.

It should work OK.
After resetting mine I can see 55 to 60 mpg average over a tank full.
If I commute through Leeds for a few days I can see the average fall to 48mpg. A two up with luggage motorway blast gives 43mpg, After checking average consumption with fuel used its accurate to a few mpg. Its a shame the accuracy is not reflected by the fuel gauge. I'm now used to the 17 lt fuel tank (I know its 21 lt) which is all I get in when the countdown is almost zero.

Mine seems to add 80 or 90 miles to whatever was showing prior to filling up - then creeps up to 320(ish) over the next 30-40 mins.

It works well up until the point where the fuel level sensor starts to fail and then you run dry. It will happen to you one day. Always use a trip meter as well - the bike has two for this very reason.

When your fuel level sensor finally goes phut budget a couple of hundred to get it fixed at a main dealer.

One very annoying feature is that you can't show the trip mileage by default. I usually forget to switch mine largely because I always end up showing the wrong trip or tipping it back to total mileage.
