Fuel strip 07 1200 gsa

I am on my second fuel strip which has ceased to work spoke to my local bmw motorrad shop about getting a 3rd replacement strip they said that they must get on to the bmw tech guys in germany and the following is the advise back bring bike to workshop test the strip to see what resistance is has, then remove strip and turn 180 degrees reinstall and calibrate if it works all is good if not repeat up to 12 times and after that replace. Did anyone else get that advice or is it a load of Bullsh**t?

Mine has just gone (2010 GSA) at 87.000 miles. Just going to live with the flashing yellow triangle - might get it replaced when next in for a service (depends on price) I never totally relied on it anyway. Passed its MoT with it like that too - so won't be a fail for anyone wondering.

1. Aren't they calibrated out of the tank?.
2. I've had 11 strips and have never heard this advice.
3. Doesn't the fuel pump work harder when the low fuel light is on. (For Mr Flintlock)
4. I'd rather have a working fuel strip, especially on my 36 litre tank adventure. Too much variance in fuel use.
5. That said my last fuel strip is accurate when full and nearly empty. In between it's miles out. For instance I can have covered 300+ miles on a tankful and it will tell me I still have a range of 220-250 miles. By the time I hit about 300-360 miles it will then drop to being very accurate.

Mine went on my 1200GSA. Replaced it with what I was told at the time was a defective bunch of fuel strips that BMW were still selling and/or using to replace warranty ones.
The new one lasted 1 year and 8 months before it to failed. Lucky they offered a 2 year warranty.
The new new one installed in January is supposedly from a new batch with different part number but I never received any paperwork for the work so they may have just flipped it upside down and reinstalled.

Either way BMW had faulty parts, then had more faulty parts made to replace them.

Time will tell...

The low fuel light does not come on on mine - just the hazard & the fuel word on the dash.
Might have to get the black tape out.

I don't have the flashing fuel warning light. The tank is 3/4 full but only showing a range of 143kms have a new xt2 might use the fuel usage portion to see if it is better for gauging the fuel range.

07 GS bought 4 years ago, 32k miles, fuel strip went after 18months, went to bmw main dealer gford who replaced it. 2nd fuel strip went after not many miles they declined to cover until i asked what warranty they give on OE parts, i think it was 2 years and i was 23 months into it so after a couple of phone calls they replaced the item but i had to pay for time which was £200 !!

they did say it was due to leaving the bike for a long time with a full tank, all the crap put into the fuel eats at the copper strip, not sure if it BS

Also i have seen on this great site a chap who converted his to the older float fuel measuring thingy which i feel will be next if and when tit goes again

if they fit a part and it dies inside the 2 year warranty - they pay everything - this is typical lies and BS people peddle - you have legal rights go and get your 200 quid back !!! ideally u paid on a credit card dispute it and tell them to F off

note in May 2022 they acknowledged the rubbish they were fitting didn't work and upgraded the part

also note in a country that stands up for their rights (USA) a judge agreed BM were a bunch of charlatans and extended the warranty on this part to 12 years and ordered them to hand back money for any expense owners had wasted buying and having these joke parts fitted

the law says you have 2 years (its not BMW being nice, they have to do it) - in fact at the price and it being a BMW - you can argue its a premium part from a premium manufacturer - (and you will win) - thus the law changes, to something you can reasonably expect to last a bit longer (when did you EVER hear a fuel gauge stops working on any car inside 15 years ??) so now the timeline moves to 6 years for you to beat up the crooks peddling this trash
