Fuel Strip - Warranty Extended to 12 Years

After a few minutes of pleasant discussion, the service manager said they'd send an official dealer request to BMW UK to replace the fuel strip as an act of goodwill......so we'll see what happens....

Keith, try to pay a contribution if possible which I understand then entitles you to a two year warranty on the replacement part from the date of fitting by a BMW Motorrad dealer.

I had mine replaced at Bahnstormers for £200, if it goes again once outside that warranty I'll buy the part and calibrate it myself with my GS911.

RonnieG, I like the official stance on this: They might as well just say "Cheers sucker, this 'aint America, now Fck Off" to all of us.

Good luck with that it'd be cool to get a freebie :thumby: still got to get mine inspected I know housing is good though have already looked :)

Well we'll see.....I did hammer the complimentary coffee though :D

Not a bad idea Adam. They are going to drop me an e-mail over the next week/10 days so I'll see what they have to say initially; I can then always reply with the contribution idea.....then the e-mail dialogue will be @ warp speed.....;)

Good luck Keith!

Given my lack of progress with approaching BMW UK Customer Service personally you gotta hope that you stand a better chance of success with the Motorad dealer putting the request in on your behalf :thumb

Here's hoping.......

Out of interest did you buy your bike from a Motorad dealer and / or service the bike within the Motorad dealerships?

I bought the bike from Premier Bikes in Oxford (non BMW main dealer).

The bike had it's first 3 services @ Vines in Guildford (BMW main dealer); I then had 1 further service @ a BMW main dealer & wasn't impressed by the price or the fact that some of the fixtures & fastenings on le bike hadn't been put back on correctly.......since then I've used the same independent mechanic for all servicing.

They are saying the bike is too old to qualify for goodwill - so if that is the case, then maintaining a full dealer service history is a pointless exercise as they dont value it. Likewise, if a bike is not purchased from a BMW dealer, then you are also up sh*t creek.

The latest response from BMW to my questions - apparently now if you dont extend your dealer warranty, their (BMWs) defective products arent covered by goodwill. Does that make sense to anyone?

I wonder what factor(s) made BMW North America believe that the continual fuel strip issues being suffered by many owners was not acceptable and convinced them to extend the warranty to 12 years compared to BMW UK's continuing stance that ' a manufacture defect has not occurred' when it so clearly has?

What vehicle manufacturer in the world would deem an electronic fuel level indication system that fails in the way that so many BMW's are as not being a manufacture defect?

All my servicing is carried out by a trained BMW mechanic (who is now an independent) and uses genuine parts et al.....:D

The part in question has gone kaput & is well known to around the world.....BMW NA have acknowledged this, but BMW UK continues to not acknowledge this.....perhaps we just have to be patient!!!!

For me, this poor service towards their customers is another reason to do my own servicing once outside of the warranty:

It means I get no goodwill anymore (on a 6 year old bike? Yeah, right!!) but at least I save money which can then pay to sort issues later if they occur and I also get the satisfaction and reassurance of seeing the job done the way I want it.

Also had two occasions to be dissatisfied with main dealer servicing (spark plug covers missing post-service, serious play in final drive after a service which allegedly included a road test) which was the final nail for me. When I pay top dollar, I expect top service. Both issues were resolved once I raised my complaints, but if they were professional I shouldn't have to.

Also, if you have an 'approved used' warranty and think you are fully covered, check the terms of what is covered. I recall I saw a fair few exclusions/exceptions compared to a new bike warranty when reading the terms and conditions.

Hi all. New 2008 1200gs owner having recently converted from Jap sporty stuff. Took bike to John o groats and back (from essex) and love it....what have I been missing. ....
I picked up bike with knackered fuel guage and 2 tyre sensors broken. Thought I'd get them all fixed just to stop dash flashing.
£533 ....dealer. seems excessive. They also said bike needs £2k of work. ...really? ?
Shocked. 31k on it....Fsh. service reminder just came on
Anyone got any feedback on. independent London operation Japandgerman? ?? They look good on website and reasonable.. Would love an endorsement from this group. ........

Hi mate....I've put a couple of BMW independent tech details on your intro post.....:D

I then informed him that it had been like that for a while, so he called over the service manager. Well it's been 10 days since my visit to Coopers, and not a whisper about the fuel strip.....no surprise there then.

I'll be calling them next week when I return to blighty for an update.......which there probably won't be one!!

Tyre pressure sensors probably just need new watch batteries in them. An easy fix but needs tyres removing, new batteries (CR2023 IIRC) and some resin or silicone to reseal. Can also get new sensors cheap enough at about £70 each and pair to the bike with a GS911 diagnostic tool: Link below, check post 45 onwards.

Fuel strip is about £99 for the part, an hours labour and a GS911 tool to re-calibrate to the bike from fully dry.

Service reminder is also resettable with a GS911 tool (obviously AFTER firstly completing the service). I do all my own servicing as its straightforward enough, however there are plenty of independents about or you could go to your main dealer and brace yourself.

Someone's having a laugh with that quote. Grab your ankles and bite down on something, it's gonna hurt.

Fuel strip.

My '05 Rt showing all the signs of fuel strip failure.
Local dealer got no knowledge of any extended warranty from BMW UK.

£210 to do the job. Would tackle it myself but it needs resetting on the computer.....

Anybody know if there is a way around the computer reset?
Cheers

I'd say shafted. You could try emailing the customer services lady in my posts and see what BMW UK would do. I would expect nothing but the more people report this issue they may start to consider this issue an 'issue'.
