For some reason I can't get the left hand side bolt hole to line up on by 2010 GSA. The tank is hard against the rubber stop but it needs to go further across?

The right hand side goes in with a lot of persuasion. Am I missing something?

The tank, being plastic, will deform with fuel inside it, the heavier the load, the worse it deforms.....You could drain it off if it's full, that'll help.

Roger.

Some other maker's bikes have plastic fuel tanks that have expanded with age to the point they can never fit the bike - so we can consider ourselves lucky.

I got some new socket hex bolts and machined (or you could file) the first 10mm of thread off the end. This gives a lead-in so you can get the threads started without getting it cross threaded. Ordinary hex bolts will do but the socket head allows the Allen key to keep it in line while you lever the tank back a few mm.

So I take it that it's a fairly normal problem? The previous owner obviously had the same problems as the hex is almost rounded off.

Just seems a bit daft!

A bike engineer told me he's getting a lot of work building alloy tanks to replace old poly tanks that have expanded. Some Morinis are a real problem. He said (I cant confirm the info) that a certain British manufacturer expects its poly tanks to expand and owners should replace them every few years.

On the GS/A you need the tank empty, fit one screw loosely and then fit the other which will need a lead-i to connect without cross threading. Also check your frame threads are clear - they are easy to damage trying to get the standard bolt in.

I had to remove and replace on the roadside while on a trip so was half empty. Do they expand due to heat? In the end I had to leave one bolt out. Wasn't sure if it was worth trimming down the rubber bung it sits on?

Thats what I mean Bendy. Found that one out myself after jumping up and down on the tank for 5 minutes :augie

Loosen the bolts that hold the rubber mounts to the frame at the front where the tank slots into it will give you a bit more movement to locate the bolts at the rear.
