So today was filling my pride and joy with fuel and struggled to get the nozzle out of the tank, eventually it came out with a rubber grommet type thing attached to it no idea what it's for?? part no is 0632 767 8016 - 03 564361 -10 NBR is all the detail that's on it.

So what is it and do I need it? BMW obviously think I do or is an anti fuel device to stop you putting diesel in it, I know it sounds a bit tractor like at times lol

Cheers

I seem to recall an oversize washer thingy on my 2006 in the filler neck whose job was to stop you from using diesel.
Usin you vin number will allow you to look up yourself on https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partgrp?id=0303-EUR-09-2007-K25-BMW-R_1200_GS_08_0303,0313_&mg=16

it helps to hold the nozzle square to the bike - which you need as in general its an appalling design - I expect 3 main functions

stop the nozzle falling out and scratching the bike / setting fire to the filling station
stop fuel splashing all over the bike as you fill / and possibly setting fire to the bike
reduce damage to the filler flap surround

still in mine - can't think why you'd bother messing with it

Much easier to brim the tank. As for the above, never been a problem, though you do seem to make drama out of so many GS/GSA traits that don't bother anyone else.:D

do you really thing the accountants would let them waste a penny making and another penny fitting it, if there wasn't a good reason ?

So my OCD got the better of me, I couldn't stand the thought that my bike was broken and not how BMW wanted it to be, so plucked up the courage to step through my localish dealer on foreign soil to inquire if they had said part, parts guy was quite jovial (makes a change) said it's unlikely they have it as it's an old bike (fuck off 2007 isn't old is it?) but they had one showing in stock, hmmm and how much is it?? anyway a short tour of the showroom looking at the lovely jewelery was curtailed but the parts guy proclaiming he had in fact got one, bugger i now can't buy a new bike oh well so for 2.90 (euro) my bike is now back to how Jerry wanted it to be.
