Fuel tank leaking valve

Hi,

Here's a pic of the breathers and return valve on the right side of my GS.

I just did a 24k service and then developed a starting problem, which I think I've narrowed down to either a duff fuel pump controller or a problem with the return valve on the tank.

The problem is that the connector on the tank leaks even when the pipe is disconnected, which I assume must be a fault? The valves on the tank should close when the pipe is removed? Is that right?

The symptoms are the bike was hesitating under rapid application of high load..... I.e. Opening the throttle full in the 5k-7k range. It now has refused to start at all.

I'm trying to establish if the duff return valve could cause the problem or is it most likely the pump controller.


Any ideas?

Return fuel flow is used to drive a venturi (jet) pump to move fuel from the other side of the tank. Poor fuel flow will cause only one side of the tank to be used so the tank runs "dry" even though it still contains fuel. If the fuel flow is really poor the engine wont run at any time. It can be the fuel pump or the controller (FPC). The FPC is the least cost to investigate. Fit the workaround bypass and see if the bike runs.

Search Fuel Pump Controller and you'll have enough reading for a flight to Sydney.
 
Appreciate the reply. Yeah, I think I broke google searching for it.

Do you know if the valve on the tank that drives that pump should leak if nothing is connected to it? Petrol pouring out of mine.

It has a small metal pin and clip on it and my guess is that when connected, the fuel line should open the valve? Then when you slide the other part to remove it should seal it.

Its likely to be a simple quick release connector. Plug the hole with a suitable wooden or plastic peg.

The outer part of the connector had sheared off cleanly and left part inside the connector holding the valve open!

Fuel pump controller replaced, new connector fitted. Bike back to old self.

Another controller bites the dust!

You show exactly how much I know (not a lot TBH). I thought they were just quick release not valved jobbies. The old pump controller could be handy to make a bypass for that overland trip to Capetown.
 
Yeah, done that and fitted a din plug!
