From what I’ve read on here, you should be trying an XADV 750 scoot.
An X-ADV 750 might work for comfy 2 up riding but is isn't really middle weight. Had mine for 5 years and toured a lot but found it's heavy to push around and weighs over 230kg fuelled up.

His wife may take a ‘back seat’ on pillion duties in the future though

I reckon it’d be fine as they’re both slim and lighter side
Cheers gents. Jb...if she decided to quit...it'd be dead easy...as it is she's a pain in as much as she doesn't pillion often but does still enjoy it and still wants the odd trip. The Aprilia really wouldn't work for us. I don't need owt over 100hp...my 95hp AT had done just fine for 7.5 yrs...it is simply the weight that Im trying to get down...coupled with a full sized bike. Lots of options available and I'd hoped there'd be a light bulb moment or something that I'd missed....I'll likely spend some time around some showrooms with my trusty tape measure (always get odd looks off sales guys but knowing the minimum dimensions for pillion space means I can ditch some "choices" from the start without 'her' having to traipse round with me as she hates it.
There's a solution out there for us...

Tuareg 660 is about 85-86 bhp (but only 10bhp down on your AT)
BUT…..at 200kg fuelled is probably 20-30kg less than your AT
That’s gonna make a difference
Try one
You may be surprised, it may be fine for 2up

What they produce on paper are poles apart from real life riding compared to the AT. Itll be the torque that i "use" most of the time...and much as I do like the Tuareg 660...it would be no good for us...both in physical size (looked at them when we sat on a Transalp) and ooomff. It will be more like 50kg lighter as the AT DCT is/was c 252kg (in the 80s/90s my gf at the time, and I tried a CBR and FZR 600 v the 1000 versions. On paper there wasn't too much in them...on the road, in the real world, two up they were hugely different.)

We did several European tours including Alps and Pyrenees two up on a Vstrom 650. Never found it lacking in any department. Plenty of room for a 17 stone 6 foot 3 bloke and his wife. Lots of Givi luggage options. And economical.
Always enjoyed other bikers reactions on the ferry home when asked what bike we were on - even the super patronising "Oh well done" from a Triumph 1200 rider made me smile. I told him I borrowed my wifes lippy and put Exploder on one side of the tank and GS on the other so they would let us on the ferry.
