Hi i'm new on here ive been riding enduro's and trail riding for last 20+ years , in May i broke my leg in 3 places and my ankle :( in Wales (plaster should be off next week ), so now i'm looking for bike for daily commute and some trail riding (had to sell ktm 450 and road bike to pay bills for last 16 weeks ) i don't want to do enduro's any more (wife would kill me ) so i was thinking funduro or early gs 650 how capable are these and can you modify them to be better off road :thumb

Hi Will, welcome to the site, have a browse around, theres a technical section for the 650s and a dedicated thumpers section that ought to answer your questions :thumb2

Will,

if you're used to enduro "tackle" you'll probably find the BM 650s a tad heavy. But you will get used to the weight.

Try to get the Dakar version - 21" front wheel and more ground clearance/suspension make this a better off road bike (unless you're short in the leg;))

The Funduro, GS and GS Dakar all make excellent commuters and will tackle long journeys easy enough, and of course are more capable off road than people give them credit for.

I think you're making a good choice for a "one bike for all".

Room on the back for the Mrs aswell :D

Rode mine around the Alps scratching and scraping the panniers. Off road it mainly. Cheap to run, cheap to insure and very capable off road. Standard Dakar is the model to go for :thumb

Can you modify a GS................mmmmmm here's mine :thumb

Hi thanks for info wow flipfly that does answer my modify question what front end have you got on there ,yeah the weight will take some getting used to but not going to race it just some gentle laning and more important getting to work , i want to get back to having fun on bike like i used to on my first bikes dt 175 ,xr 200/250's i seem to have lost that somewhere along the way with bigger faster better handling bike's doing more extreme stuff  anyway what do you think is price for older dakar :nenau i'm not tight but after 16 weeks and counting with no money coming in i'm on pretty tight budget , thats why i was thinking of funduro and modding it as i went along :thumb

The F650GS, or the Dakar version, will do the job nicely, but yes, you can certainly do it on the older Funduro as well......it's still the same Rotax unit so pretty bullet proof, and they can be modified as you go to make tham as off-road friendly as you like.....just putting a set of TKV 80's on one will get you happily down most green lanes or you could go to the extremes.....don't forget that that model, albeit heavily modified, won the Paris Dakar, so anything's possible :D

Lots of info on making the funduro more off-road orientated HERE :)

Hi Will,
Welcome to the site, somebody on here will always have an opinion or answer to a quetion wether it be bike related or not,if you subscribe there is much more on the site that is open to you and it will be the best £12 you ever spent.
Anyway back to your question.I purshased a 94 funduro about 6mnts ago just to bomb around on and do the odd bit of trail/greenlane riding.
It has 16000mls on the clock(genuine)and is in very good overall condition, all for the princely sum of £800.
Well i have bombed around on it and had it off road several times and i must say what a cracking little bike,it will keep up with most stuff on the back roads will cruise happily at 80 and whilst it's no xchallange it is great fun off road and is tough as old boots.
If funds allow i would if i where you go for the dakar, but if the budget is tight don't be afraid to give the funduro a try.

Happy hunting Steve

Looked at the Funduro (mid 90's era) and ended up with the Aprilia, 5 BHP more and lighter to boot. Will do a ton (just) and was a cracking bike. I sold it to a mate who was to be on our trip for £1500 as I had stripped and powder coated the whole frame etc, fitted crach bars, pannier racks, HID light auxilary light etc....

Now he's not going :blast

Still it funded my GS :thumb2

Good bikes, stupid easy to ride as a comute bike and I had mine leaping out of bomb holes off road!:bounce1

My front end is the proper TT item. They are KTM forks but it the yokes that cost(huuuuuuuuuge money). I also have a TT swingarm (rocking horse poo) with an extended WP shock. Note the Excel rims too (with a bigger 18" rear wheel).

There are a few fork options that work out much cheaper and is probably the better way to go:thumb Yam 426 forks can bemade to fit IIRC.

Don't ask me about prices:blast I'd value mine at £2500 (the fork kit and wheels would cost that alone) but I always undervalue. It's the john Deacon colours, which along with the monochrome black and white ones, were both Ltd editions, standard colours fetch a little less IMO.

If you have 2k you'll get ya hand on a dakar, 2.5k will get ya a really nice one :thumb

Of course, you could just keep the perfectly adequate standard forks :rob

Call George on 07775925395, he's got my one I rebuilt with all the powder coating done, crash bars and pannier rails (in my workshop) bash plate, HID, twin after maket exhaust (sounds great but not too loud) brand new Avon Distanzias, HH brake pads, full service, new water pump, rad guard..... The list goes on...:drool

£1500 as that's what he paid me, a little high for a 1997 Pegaso but it's had all the the work done. Yes they are better than the BMW! :hide

You could, but that would be just tooooooooooo sensible :D:D:D

Trying to work out how to fit a R1 engine in at the mo. Skygod said his R1 motor was dead smooth when he went across Antartica on it :thumb

between GS and 650 I d go for the 650 by the sound of it... Just don't expect anything remotely as capable as the ktm450 off road. BMW just doesn't make any bikes that are light enough to be proper enduros. HOWEVER, and despite the trade off in off rad capability, I think the BM will be a better long term ownership prospect than what you had before and is a million miles more comfortable for 90% of your miles....

Cheers Guys still thinking it over got plenty of time !! not sure about pegaso have heard spares can be problem /long wait , have the f650gs got any more performance than funduro also dakar's seem lot more money are they really worth extra , must admit they are bit pricey have put few feelers out with mates so far have been offered vfr 800, vtr 1000 ,1200 bandit , and xt 660r all within my budget and local to me quite tempting ?????

XT660 is a very useable tool, but the R is on road I think.

Probably a bit smoother engine than the F650GS. I've ridden out with an XT600 on more than a few occasions and with a good rider on they are exceptionally good :thumb
Cheap to buy too.

Well iv'e subscribed and am looking now would prefer dakar version but see what comes along in my price brackett ??????????????????? :D
