Just picked up my GSA after being in storage for 4 years and found the harness sleeve like this! Plastic has hardened up and splits if moved, anyone else seen this? Would it be best to cut back and tape up or has anyone tried anything else.. Bike was throughly cleaned and covered before going in a garage.

What do you think the white residue is on the sleeving ? Could it have had a cleaning product left on the plastic?

Give the sheath a good clean up and if you still want to repair you have the patience you can buy rolls of wiring loom tape quite cheaply.

Whilst in that area check for very tight cable ties and snip and if you replace them, just do up loosely to support only.

I can't believe that I've just read one guy telling another guy to give his sheath a good clean up and over an hour's gone by without even a snigger...:D

The same outer harness sleeves on my GS disintegrated with only the wiring visible. The rubber compound used just fell apart. And not just at the handlebars but all over from front to back.

Cut all the cable ties holding any wiring around the headstock. This will save the wiring from being contentiously bent at the same point which leads to wiring breakages over time.

I have just re-wrapped my loom and have cable tied the wires reasonably tight around the headstock (though i did check for 'pulling'). Thanks for the tip, I will remove them tonight and loosen things up.

Mine's equally brittle, especially under the tank! I'd thought about re-wrapping it if I ever get around to it. For now i've just used silicone spray to rejuvenate the bits you can see.....

about 5 years ago I stripped off all the factory sheathing - what was left of it anyway and wrapped all the wires with spiral wrap and the black electrical tape over the top of that (wrapping opposite direction to the spiral wrap)
My thoughts are that this is better becuase if there is an electrical problem some time later, it easy to remove to get to the wires.

Electrical tape is shite and gets even worse after a few months.

On everything car and bike I am a believer in the Merkin Maxim: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If you must do something with it, however, use self amalgamating tape. Just start well clear of the fractures, and stretch it well. Do a second layer if you feel you need more. Do not cut the original sheathing off. Doing so is the road to hell.

well there you go, two opinions of electrical tape.
Funnily enough, my experience of self amalgamating tape is shite, a bastad to get out of the way when you want to access something

Maybe it depends where you are, me, In the tropics, massive high humidty
