Fuse box, relays and dipped beam

Hello All

I was wondering if anyone has a diagram or picture explaining the relays and their uses or an R1150 GSA 04 plate bike. The handbook explains the fuses but not the relays which i did not think was very helpful.

Also my dipped beam has gone. Gone where i hear you ask? I have checked the bulb and that is fine and had a brief examination of the wiring around the head stock and that looks ok. I also checked all the bladed fuses and they also seemed ok. I do however have a void in the fuse box where it looks as though a relay should be placed. It is situated in the middle section of the fusebox and at the bottom. (This is if you were standing on the nearside of the bike looking at the fuse box) I cannot recall if there has ever been one there so hence the first paragragh above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The missing relay is the "cat code plug" link.Nothing to do with problem.
Have you checked the bulb with a meter or swopped it with hi-beam (both H1s)?

Folks, thanks for the advice and the diagram I bought a new bulb and that did not solve the problem so i think i will have to borrow a voltage meter to check supply next.

Start off at the wiring around the headstock where the plonkers at Spandau put the cable ties on too tightly and it bends the cabling every turn of the bars....common fault

Er no, actually, check from the bulb backwards.....chances are it'll be the earth from the dip bulb

Well I finally got round to checking and the problem I have is this. When i tested the circuit using a volt meter i had about 11.97 volts displayed with the ignition on when testing across the positive and earth lead for the light. I thought great must be the bulb and tried the old one and the new one and still NO LIGHT AGHHHHH! I then placed the new bulb in the rear of the lamp unit attached the wires and tried a voltage check again touching the end of the positive and earth again no light and no voltage! I touched the postive and then on the crash bars for an earth and again 11.97 popped up on the display. So why is there no earth on the light unit? This is my question. Any ideas? The connectors look clean! I must be doing something wrong Any ideas would be really grateful as i am now fed up of the dark and want to step out into the light!!!!!!!

Where does the earth side of the bulb wiring attach to earth...this could be the culprit (high impedance/resistance connection).
When you connect a volt meter across the bulb connections (sans bulb) you may read a voltage as the DVM (voltmeter) is very high resistance and hence very little current flows. However, when you plug in a bulb more current tries to flow and this then brings the poor earth connection into play. It's like having two resistors in series...the DVM is a very high resistance and so you see most of the supply voltage across it (V=I x R), however the bulb is lower resistance especially compared to the bad earth connection and thus most of the volage will be seen across the crappy connection.
Actually the crap connection doesn't have to be on the earth side...it could be on the live side...say, where the live feed comes from a fuse/relay or where the wire has been damaged, especially fatiguing through bending the wire.
Trace the wires and check all the connections are clean and tight.

Well I have found that the problem is the earth as you have all pointed out. I placed a short piece of wire from the earth on the back of the light and placed the other end on the handlebar bolts and there was light!!!!!! I now have to check the earth.
I believe the full and dipped beam share the same earth on the gearbox wherever that is? Earth I mean not the gearbox! Anyone have any ideas please? Thanks for all the advice so far I really appreciate it

cheers for all the suggestions, all sorted. Baz came round beaten round head with wet fish, cleaned terminals and checked connections, as if by magic !!!! all working now, maybe next time i'll charge him for my time and expertise...... ex as in has been, spurt being water under pressure!!!!

Have you checked all the fuses. On my 2003 GS one of the fuses labeled as a 'spare' was in fact wired up for the dipped beam.

I checked the fuses and relays and they were ok. Pete kindly helped me fix it. It was a loose earth connection at the back of the bulb housing but when i stopped for fuel a mile up the road the light failed to come on when i started again. A quick wobble of plastic main connection at the rear of the light unit and there was light. Dodgey connections eh Cheers
