After 4 years of nearly getting my G/S on the road I would like to tidy the paint up on the fuel tank, it has been painted before but poorly and the paint that was put on never really hardened so i need to do something. I took most of the paint off leaving the base primer however when primed I have lot of D A swirls and other tiny chips so anyone know of a decent primer/filler that would take these out sanding it back even more?

Sorry a typo it should say "decent primer/filler that would take these out without sanding it back even more?"

I’m no expert on paint,however
The end finish is totally reliant on the prep.
I have all my steel tanks acid dipped prior to paint.
That way you know for certain there is nothing lurking that will come through at some point and spoil the expensive bit.
If you use a filler primer you are still going to have a fair old bit of wet flatting to get things on track.
You may as well take it back to bare metal.

I'm with Mikey on this one. I'm no painter but do paint all my own bikes and am starting to get , for an armature, reasonable results. My method is to acid dip, etch prime, body filler were required and then two part high solids primer, any brand will do, block sand, finish sand with wet and dry 1500, base coat (easy to shoot), clear coat (takes time to learn how). Good luck, give it a go.

I use a cellulose stopper, applied with a small, 1/2" spatula. Its vey smooth and is applied from a 'toothpaste tube'.

Even from a bare metal start I find it useful to get out the smallest of marks, meaning less primer / filler. You still need primer filler to give 'body' but reduces a lot of 'flatting back' with 1200grit W&D in between layers.

Ok thankyou guys i hear what your saying, I think for now i will just bang a little white paint on to tidy up and get on the road and next winter get a full and proper job done .
