G450X has ceased production

Well interestingly enough one of my friends rode my G450 and has now bought one.....another friend also likes it and is considering selling his 400EXC and buying one. Bet that would go down well on the UK KTM forum :augie

It would ... they would all p**s themselves laughing.

Is the man mad ?? :P:P

I bet they would Brompton !

But seriously, I have always been a bit of a KTM fan and my 05 200EXC was a fantastic bike. I had every intention of getting a 09/10 450EXC but when I rode one I just didn't gel with it. The suspension was really harsh and it felt a bit of a hand full for green lanes. I also rode the 450 berg which was great but who has 7K + kicking around for a dirt bike, I don't.

So there was a G450 came up with only 50 miles for £4K so I thought for that price I would take a punt, and do you know for green lanes I love it, the suspension is very plush and the FI means the motor is very smooth. I've never really been a BMW fan and I dont like their cars, but I judge each machine on its merits.

My mate bought an 09 400 EXC, and while its a very nice bike and the motor is good, he cannot get the suspension right on it, so much so he is thinking of getting shot of it. We have been mucking about with it for months now. I rode it and it just does not feel planted, you feel like the front is going to wash out at any time and it just feels "harsh" if that makes any sense?

IMHO.........

Suspension is a very personal thing. Take the bike to a suspension specialist and they can sort out any bike for you. This will likely be a lot cheaper than changing the bike.

He alreay has been to see a WP guy and had a call with someone else. ??????

I had mine set up by Triple D motorsport in Kendal.

Stage 1 revlave with a progressive rear spring.

Chris Byron at On Track racing is also a very good hand.

Get it done properly and it will transform the bike.

Like has been said it would probably be cheaper than changing.

Suspension is the most important item on any bike. To date it as taken me a year to get my suspension working and still have to learn more on setting the suspension up. It's not just a BMW 450 thing it's any bike. I have found the faster and more aggressive I ride the 450 the better this bike rides it just loves the rough and pro-forms great in straight line speed. I have been riding tracks designed for 250cc to 300cc bikes and this has been challenging on the 450 but this has improved my riding skills. I've been over the handle bars a few times and dropping the bike on many corners. New Zealand riding is tight very hilly with many rides on deep sandy forest trails which leads to slippery large tree roots on almost all the hill climbs.

I think what is annoying my mate is the fact that all I did on the G450X was wind back the compression damping on the forks........and its great.

Where as everyone told him the 400EXC was a trail riders dream but so far its been a pain in the arse :blast

seeing as nobody wants my 450 I'm collecting mine back from Vines, I think it's a good bike and am probably gonna keep it.

Maybe you are not as fussy as he is?

Just a thought - is your mate's weight significantly different to that for which the bike's stock suspension was designed for? At a guess, suspension on all these trails bikes will be based around an average rider weight of ~75-80Kg.

i'm 103 and have no problems at all.
There are people out there giving advice on how to run the 450 and they don't know a thing about the bike.

I tried a 450KTM back to back with my G450X and found it plusher but not as nimble as mine on twisty hilly stuff, performance wise the KTM was quick to pick up the front wheel yet felt 'heavier' for want of a better word. Horses for courses I guess, he liked his KTM and I liked my 450. We both had our suspension set up very differently despite riding on the same terrain. On the very fast (135+) sections mine certainly seemed to have the edge. Either that or I was missing the vital brain cells....

I was at the milan bike show this weekend and they had the 450 on show with all the rest of the range, with the original swing arm set up...

if there wasw a bmw 2012 would it still be an husq?

i must atmid i really like the husq
but i'm stil true to my never failed once beemer 450.

The G450X is still listed on most European BMW Motorrad websites - except the UK.
