G650 X Country - any good?

A pic & part Nos of the hand guards would be good.

Has anyone de-catted the original or fitted an aftermarket (road legal) can?
Is it worth it performance/economy.....

Also looking at increasing fuel capacity too, other than that getting on great with the X Country :ronno

Hi Micky

I cannot find that rack on Wunderlich's website, do you have a link?

Sorry there CM .... a CRAFT moment on my part :rob

It's a Wunderlich rack on my F800GS with a Peli case. On my G650XC it's a BMW rack fitted with a Peli case. Apologies for the duff information :nenau

I de-catted the original exhaust, made it a little lighter, maybe a little noisier but not a lot :) No noticeable difference in performance, but a Remus free flow front header certainly makes it a little livelier :D

Fitted a Remus Revolution exhaust (de catted) but I'm more than sure the bike is nicer & smoother with the de catted original. :thumb

Great info guys, thanks.

Discovered today that the original Metzler Tourance are not very good on Grass! Need something better for green laning.

Bent brake lever, twisted bars, light scuffing, flattened Ego!

Hi all, just a bit of an update!

After a little uncertainty about living with the "X" in the early days, I have settled into the bike a treat & we are getting along great :)

A few tweaks are required here & there like; extra fuel capacity, screen & modify the BMW rack - it's pretty useless to strap things too as standatd!

So far;
I have sourced a new X Country tank bag, they fit great & are good quality :)

Scottoiler has been fitted (along with valves + plugs checked, throttle body cleaned, new air filter (my - they are small!) while I was in there)

I found the rear spring a bit soft (too much sag) with (minimal) camping gear on so I have added a 7mm spacer above the spring to increase the base setting of the preload a bit, although ideally a stronger spring may have been best.

I have fitted a Remus exhaust although even with the baffles in it's a tad vocal, I'd ideally like it abit quieter for pootling through quiet country villages & on longer trips - I may go back to the stock exhaust yet if adding another (a 2nd) baffle in the Remus doesn't do the job well enough!
Somewhere between 'the stock exhaust & baffled Remus' lies happiness for me!!!
Does anyone have an effective solution for baffling an aftermarket can?

The clutch lever never returned fully as there is no return spring at the clutch cover end (???) so I added a "push" spring over the cable between the cable bracket & the operating lever - the lever now returns fully :)

I have also lowered the bike as I don't need the full height under bike clearance, dropping the F&R fully (about an inch) left the bike too vertical on the side stand & when I checked, the front mudguard would also catch the radiator on full compression. I have now settled on 1/2" lower than stock full height.

Fuel consumption is great, generally returning about 70mpg, a low of 62 (trully razzing it - worst case scenario!) & a high of 79mpg yesterday :-)

Tips, comments & pointers welcomed
Phil

Try emailing Micky

he has a road marked Remus for sale, which he has de-catted and is quieter than the offroad style one that you probaby are using

Hmmm, the wife'd kill me if I bought another exhaust for the bike!
I'd be interested to see the baffles from the road legal can, to compare with the Freeride that I have.
I tried a friends' Scorpion road legal (off a 600 Fazer), it was loud too!

I'm tempted to decat the original, although it doesn't sound like there is much/any advantage from bit's I have read.

Regards, Phil

Zorzt gone JB .... the lad got a bargain, full Remus system, free flow header pipe with Titanium road legal can (MIT Cat removed) as new, £300

Still in love with my Xcountry :thumb

Having a Ti Remus with Kat, I reckon the bike is quicker with the standard exhaust with Kat
Only benefit with Remus is it weighs 2kg less

Out of interest, how did you find the Remus system & why did you sell it?

Have you noticed any changes in fuel consumption with different exhausts fitted?
I had nicely over 70mpg (twice) with the Remus fitted this weekend, Which it never did with the stock exhaust - best was circa 70mpg.

I liked the Remus ... any weight saving purely academic  A week off the bier would have saved the weight and money :D

Sounded good but I'm confident that it wasn't as smooth as the original silencer with the Kat removed .... I'm with JB on this one :thumb

The Remus 'Freeflow' front pipe certainly sounded nicer than stock, and with the standard de-catted box gave lovely sound with better all round performance.

Why sell? Rather than buy a new bike just spent some of my 'old age pension' on the couple of bikes that I have :rob

So treat myself to the full BMW Titanium Akrapovic system

Nice ;)

Is there much (any) advantage of de-catting the original?
I don't want a noisey bike but I think it's fair to say the standard bike sounds a little "underwhelming".
Induction noise is about all you get!

Cheers for the info guy's. It's all welcome!

Don't think there's any advantage, maybe a bit of weight saving, but if you know JB or myself we wouldn't be doing it to save a bit of weight

Maybe sounds a little nicer, but not a lot of difference. I think the XC's run better with the stock exhaust .....

The Akrapovic system, whilst expensive, certainly works. Certainly noisier but not too loud, and not 'Pop Pop Popety' like a Remus might be ;)

Pulls much much better and giving better torque (Hilltop Engineering)

Right!

The stock can is chopped, cat is out & away being welded. See how it feels

Did It too!
But sommething is strange! At first It feels more torquy at low revs but then takes more time to get to the higher revs than stock with the cat. Also I'm a bit disapointed about the heat still coming from the head pipe. It seems that the gas now move faster to the first chamber (no more cat) and get stuck somwhere inside inbetween the second and third chamber!
Oh,I forgot! I've got a booster plug mounted but with the cat there was no problemes of weakness in the middle of the revs when I accelerated!

Phil, Do you plan to have a cylinder soldered to replace the cat cylinder?

Hi, I didn't bother having a cylinder/tube welded in place of the cat as I didn't think it was necessary.
So far I'm very pleased with the cat removal.
The exhaust note now has character, the bike has lost the midrange hesitation/stutter that the stock cat equipped exhaust gave  and just feels perkier throught the rev range ;)

I have no idea about the booster plug that you mention...
