G650X Challenge .... new ride/ownership...tips please

Touratech side stand protection as it hangs low and is the first thing to hit

+1 :thumb

Mine took a hit in Strata florida, and thankfully didn't do to much damage, but it does all look rather sensitive down there. The first time i knew there was a problem was when i coudn't get the side stand down, and was desperate for a :monkeypiz

Anyone know who makes this engine protection bar?

The top is from TT but I've looked on line and the bottom bar is not in the catalogue ....

Looks like a good protection as it even goes around the large TT sump guard...and protects the clutch cover and the other side of the engine ...

R&G Tail Tidy :)
Though if you use the original indicators they will rub on a legal sized no plate :rob

Looks like the BMW one, from the XCountry

What the bits and pieces inside the bashplate, JB?

Industrial Rubber Belting, epoxyed to the alloy bash plate to diffuse any hits to the cases (much like the 2 rubber grommets in the original BMW bashplate)

PivotPegz fitted now and they're very good:bow:thumb2

I've seen those somewhere ... do they also help with the gear change?

Do you not lose feel of the bike's position going over the rough stuff?

Nope, it means you never have to shift your feet on the pegs - you just pivot them

Much more control

My TT bashplate has sound deadening rubber inside (look in the audio section in Halfords) to stop it ringing like a church bell. It also has sponge between it and the engine to stop it acting like a shovel.

re: crash bars - generally agree with JB in that you won't need them. My bike has been over/dropped at least 20 times, in all sorts of ways, both sides. The only things that touch down are bars, pegs and silencer. But it really depends where you are riding. If I was offroading in the Peaks a lot I would get something to protect the rads and engine.

Ta. I was thinking of that after examining the stock one I took off. And yes, i have got the foam like Gaz describes as well. It does 'ring' with the TT plate

Looking at the link - it seems that the rear brake might be activated if you go over a bump ....

PIVOT PEGZ

You'll get used to never using the rear brake on a XC, not even on the road

When you hit the front brake, the rear end goes light and the rear wheel locks in a nano second

So don't bother with the rear brake

The items below are what is on my wish list ...

TT bar risers ... a must? If you need them, I prefer it without
TT radiator crash bars ... a must? maybe, if you're paranoid

TT beak extenda ...bling - Good, keeps mud off your face

Acerbis hand guards ... a must? Definitely

TT Rear mud guard/number plate holder ... a must? - R&G is better or cut down the original

TT Frame guards - I'm getting some and the BMW (TT made) one on the right side is excellent

Long term wish list ...

Wilbers rear shock ... I really can't get used to the air thing ... - Try it at 100psi - have you ridden it offroad yet seriously? The faster you ride, the better it gets - I think it's great - I've done over 80mph offroad and it was predictable. Also look at Ohlins/WP

Remus can and header ...bling - too noisy and waste of time - try Leo Vince/BOS/Akra/Scorpion instead

TT sump guard large ... - definitely a serious - add it to the top of the list, with handguards

TT rear rack ... - another must - go for the small one @ c.£55- the big one isn't worth double

TT chain carrier - another definite must, unless you want to derail the chain and mash the crankcases

Plus the TT rear disc cover (shark's fin) - mine has got loads of rock damage to it and it has saved the rear disc from damage

My top tips - in no particular order

13T front sprocket from Talon (in UK)
Unifilter or via TT - foam airfilter - a must if you want to save your engine in dusty conditions
Handguards
BMW frame guard
TT Big bash plate
TT rear rack
TT chain guide
TT sidestand hard part - saves you breaking the frame:eek:
MT21 Pirelli tyres
HG Tuareg Rack bag and bar bag - both for less than £20
Wolfman Enduro tank bag - (superb kit from USA and all kit is designed around XC as the owner has one - they make some good soft luggage too)
Pivot Pegz
F650GS steel gearlever - a must
TT rear disc alloy cover

+1 listen to Johnny

I'm still on standard gearing which has been ok for souther terrain to date

I use a Kriega 5 lt bag fitted cross ways on my small TT rack

I will listen to Johnny - it was he that got me into this mess ... :thumb

I just went out this morning for a very genteeel ride - a little worried that I might drop it first time out so I didn't venture on anything deeper than 1mm  .....

Just trying to get used to the thing at the moment - plus it was so bloody windy, everytime I stood up I nearly got blown off the thing! :eek:eek

I've only riden my 12GSA for the last 30 months so this is like a little toy underneath me ... I locked the rear on a couple of occasions on the tarmac - evidence of a little tyre wear as a result ...doh ...

I'm not very confident on the tarmac with the off road Scorpions fitted - but what little I did off road they were great...

Anyway - it's got christened today - all be it a modest off road bimble ...

I am so happy with the bike though - i can't wait to take it out proper to get to know it a litle better ...
