On kill or ignition switch off theres a sort of ratcheting kerching sound , like the starter is resetting (?) has made this from purchase last autumn but hoping its supposed to be like that , bike starts smoothly and on the button but its a bit disconcerting hearing it everytime the bike is stopped,

anyone get same with there G650 motor?

Dont know if its related but I had to replace my badly worn starter sprag clutch after about 30,000 miles. It was shedding metal into the engine oil, and was collecting on the pick-up coil ... shorting out the pick up coil and denying me a spark.

I have a mate in Russia who always pulls the clutch in when he turns the G650 engine off to avoid this.

Same situation occurs with ~12000km on my Xchallenge - starter clutch wear caused ignition sensor to be disturbed. Unable to start engine and stucked in a woods. Before that I get what you can name metallic sound for some time.
It takes 6 weeks to find failure cause at dealer .... no comments.

6 weeks?

And I thought it was bad for me. It was a week, with the whole engine stripped down before the electrician noticed the metal filings on the pick up coil. Ah well, it was a good chance to inspect the piston, cylinder, rings and valves anyway

my shut off is only quiet when both in neutral and with the clutch pulled in, anything else and the noise happens

starter operation...still guessing.

This looks like the idler gear (not my arrow, thats the thrust washer) for starting but still cannot see how the starter engages/disengages, maybe the starter stub shaft throws out on power up.

item 11 is called the freewheel so looks like the main starter ring. The crankcase sensor sits close to this and may be it was this that got covered in filings.I am booked for a check soon so hope its just normal operation noise.

My F650 GS used to do that, I always presumed it was the automatic decompressor resetting.

My Rotax engined CCM did the same (notorious for shagging the sprag clutch/gears) and my current Husky 610 does it as well.

I like the tip of using the clutch/neutral and will give it a go as the noise makes me flinch every time.....................cheers :beerjug:
