Gaelic, who ‘guards’ it?

Sounds like the character Rob McKenna (a lorry driver) in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy......"Rob McKenna had a little book, in which were entered two hundred and thirty-two different types of rain" :D

This does not directly address the original question but it offers insight of sorts - courtesy of father Jack.

Excellent.

The Chinese lad is like me trying to pronounce (or understand) Irish place names, let alone some personal names.

This thread has awoken my dormant interest in Irish.
I'm organising a mini conference next March - nothing to do with motorbikes or Irish.
While composing an email to a potential contributor, the question of expenses arose. My fingers unconsciously hammered out "they wont be flaithiulach".

Flaithiúlach

Someone who is very generous, particularly with money, is said to be flaithiúlach. A word often used sarcastically in a pub.

Wapping's curiosity must be applauded for unleashing such a flaithiúlach exchange of views.

Absolutely, it's an interesting language and I wish I understood it better (y) Apart from "póg mo thóin" :D or "Lamh foisdineach an uachtar" which was the motto of the School my kids attended.

.........Lamh foisdineach an uachtar" which was the motto of the School my kids attended.
I had to Google that phrase & now I know where your kids attended school - in a most unsinister way.
"The gentle hand foremost" is the school motto. Uachtar being foremost but also meaning uppermost. Coomeen Uachtar - the highest coomb under Carrauntoohil. Coomeen lar is the middle coomb - in the old days Dublin buses displaying An Lar were heading to the city centre.
Uachtar is the Irish word for cream or the upper part of something. Reoite is frozen in Irish - virtually every Irish child knows what uachtar reoite is - reverting the order of words gets ice cream.

Here's a we write up on the man a forward thinker.......he had links to your part of the world. You might find interesting?
