Gaels in Mozambique.

We reached Inhambane today after 10 hours riding, including crossing the Limpopo river. The trip included, police checks, potholes, speed limits, toll booths, speed cameras, roadworks, an angry motorist and a smattering of rain, oh and a bus. We're both tired but safe and will post details and some photos tomorrow.T0170275.jpg

I worked with a lad who's FIL had negotiated a spot on the beach from the locals a bit further north on the coast but south of Beira. They went there every December holiday to enjoy life in the ruff. He showed me the pictures of beautiful beaches and unspoilt nature.

Well after a great dinner and a good sleep we began the recovery from yesterday. We had left the hotel in Maputo at 7:40 and began to do battle with the city traffic. Luckily most of it was coming into town but to ease things they informally split the outgoing carriageway so we had oncoming traffic to deal with. PH000105.jpg

We had some squally rain and just got our waterproofs on in time, and rode with them for a few hours. I had sympathy for thus guy below, as he was struggling to control the bike in the gusty wind.PH000125.jpg

We passed many of these pickup trucks crammed with people along the road. They seem a cheaper alternative to the minibus taxis.

This one was a bit different however, as we found out further up the road, when we overtook the coffin in the back of another pickup. There were 3 of these full pickups following the coffin and we respectively cruised past this funeral.PH000118.jpg

The road was well patrolled and had extensive stretches of 60km speed limits. Only two of the checkpoints stopped us and they were near Maputo. We spotted three radar speed checks and happily were not stopped by either, particularly as I was leading. This was the third radar check tucked in under the tree.PH000255.jpg

And what of today, we'll it was a short ride from Inhambane to Tofo beach. Simon caught me taking in the scene just after we arrived. My thoughts were, so this is what my 3,000km ride was all about!

The bikes are locked up and may not move for a day or so.IMG-20221112-WA0002.jpg

I suspect I'm not the only one that could cope with that setting and view right now

Enjoy, trip is looking good

On the way up we passed over ‘the great, grey-green greasy Limpopo river’ in the words of Kipling in his Just So story of The Elephants’s Child
