Gambia on an airhead?

Starter?

If you have a Valeo starter, make sure the glue for the magnets is intact. Its gonna get HOT in there

John

Have a spare valeo but not sure what is fitted on the bike. Will check when taking the gear box out for a service. :thumb2

It's a Bosch starter on the bike Thunder, make sure you know how to get at the bolts to remove it though!

Cheers & Good Luck

Ray

So what's on the list to do?

Well:

  1. Fitting HID headlamp cversion and additional lights.

Will post pics and details as things progress.

Should while away the winter nights :thumb2

Thunder I think I have the bits for the HID conversion if you're interested?

Cheers

.

Spare rotor and regulator on the list:thumb2

If you uprate the alternator a standard rotor will be of no use.

Thats the problem when you deviate from standard and use specialist parts. Not much good and extra problems when/if it goes wrong in the middle of nowhere.

My valeo that I removed, and which is apparently easier than the Bosch, but the cynics would say it needs to be, had normal hex heads holding it on, and I guess if you had ground down sockets wouldn't be too hard to remove the rear two bolts. Also AFAIK you don't have to take the front cover off with the danger to the diode board, if you forget to disconnect the battery, with the valeo, whereas on the bosch you do need to take it off.

Had to remove the airfilter case to get the bolts off :( Fitted allen head bolts, next time it'll be 100% easier.

BTW have you seen this http://www.bmw-motorcycle-magazine.com/index.php?id=33 Bought the three back issues at the NEC, some good articles.

The other side is that the build quality is so much better on the aftermarket stuff reliability is "less" of an issue

Except of course that bloody wee spring for the gearlever your just plain fecked if that goes, As proff was saying the other day the quality seems to be taking a hit there too! A new one lasted someone 2000 odd miles and he wishes that he hadn;t changed it?

All good stuff chaps and keep it coming. :thumb

Had a long chat about the upgraded alternator this morning and my assumption that a standard rotor would act as a spare was totally incorrect (you live and learn :augie) so I've decided to keep the standard system as I have a spare rotor and fit the Thunderchild diode board and components which I also have.

When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping

Christmas came early to maison Thunder this morning, I was on the phone bending the ear of the knarly old cider pimp when the door bell rang and our local postie delivered a smallish brown cardboard with my name on it.

Just as I'm walking down the hall the bell rings again and our local parcel force chap who's on first name terms as he's either dropping off or picking up is standing there with a large cardboard box.

I've not got my arse on the seat to examine the contents when the bell goes again and the DHL guy is standing there with an even bigger cardboard box!

Having opened them all like a 5 year old on Christmas morning it would appear I have enough to keep me busy until the spring! :D

Of course you can never have enough of a good thing so I finished the morning by ordering a few more interesting items for the trip, well times flies does it not?

I may be in the garage for some time................. :bounce1

Been looking at a Sito exhaust for my bike, the Keihans a bit "limp" in the aural stakes :augie

Be interested to see it on the bike and if the side panel fits on ok :) Want me to test it for you?

OOOO I'm So so Jealous Thunder :mmmm

You think a Keihan is aurally challenged,? so do I

Mine has no makers name on it but sounds absolutely Boootiful. ask any on the site who have heard the old girl.

It's also around 1.5" thinner but same side profile as a Keihan
One day some clever stainless steel man will borrow mine { I'll beg one of Thunders whilst mines being copied } and make a Dozen or so.
I reckon ALL will sell on this site in less than a WEEK !!!:rob

As long as mines put back together or replaced with a copy I'm up for it :thumb2

Saturday spannering.

Well after the start of the deliveries I thought it best to start fitting some of the bits to the bike, starting point as the extended sump spacer so out came the oil (my first ever on an airhead) and after a good clean inside the new oil pick up spacer was fitted and the spacer installed using some nice shiny stainless steel bolts rather than the galvanised ones that came with the kit.

The spacer increases the oil capacity by 1.3 litres and should prove useful on the hotter parts of the trip.

Next was the Sito exhaust, can't start the bike owing to an oil free engine but it fitted straight on with the mounting points lining up perfectly using the supplied space for the link pipe from the OE junction box. Don't know what it will sound like but I love the look of it! :D

Last but not least the new heavy duty stainless steel crash bars :augie

Stainless is the only steel in my book so I've got a complete stainless bolt and fitting kit to go on as well, might start some of that tomorrow but for now Mr Smirnoff is calling! :bounce1

Looking good :thumb2

And it looks like you're a diver too (my garage is also full of cylinders and assorted kit).
