Gap between Sargent seat and tank (justin's dumb question of the week)

As well as actually wanting an answer I thought I'd offer a new opportunity to the 1150 owners who like to display their dazzling wit and intellect by taking the piss.

So... I fitted a new Sargent seat a week ago and noticed today that there is at least a 1cm gap all the way round between the tank and the seat.

Thinking this might be to allow water to run down the tank and away rather than gathering in one's crotch, but I'm not sure...

Is there something wrong here or it that normal? Should I attempt to bend it into shape, fill that gap with something, or just leave it... being that it doesn't really cause a problem, just looks a bit pants?

If it has height adjustment the they have to allow for the seat fitting on lowest setting, not sure if you have checked this.

I had it in the lowest position and tried the higher one today and the gap was there for both...

Perhaps the gap is there so you can raise the height of the rear of the seat?

If the seat can be positioned in more than one height, then it's normal.

If it bothers you too much, use some draught excluder foam tape to fill the gap, but the fact that it's taken you a week to notice it since you fitted the seat would suggest that it's not a life changing problem

I have a Sargent low seat on my GSA, there is a slight gap, probably about 5mm max, but it isn't particularly noticeable nor does it look odd.
Are you sure you have the front of the seat located correctly, i.e. with the bar located into their 'retainers'. I was looking at someones Touratech seat that was sitting too high the other week, this left a large gap between the seat and the tank, it turned out the front bar was sitting on top of the retainers.

I also was concerned at first, when I put the Sargent seat on, about the gap. Bring of an electrical trade background, I was worried about the water running onto the battery, then found it caused no problems at in some biblical rain in the Black Forrest last year. Do'nt worry, is actually handy for Autocom leads etc.....

My Sargent low seat leaves a gap, but it's not noticeable with the Baglux cover on. Hasn't caused any electrical problems, what's underneath seems properly sealed.

If you want to 'fill in' the gap, BMW do a 'seal' for the 1150 designed to do exactly that.

It's part 3 in the attached diagram (part No 16112324872), and costs £5 from your friendly dealer.

The lengths BMW went to to save weight on the 1200!

Mate you can get some neoprene rubber off the `tinterweb (evilbay is good) as I had EXACTLY the same issue with mine or offer to buy me wine nexct time you see me and I`ll send you a length as I have some spare - pm me with your address if you want me to do this
