I am going to leave my machine in Nice for the summer and use Easyjet to go back and forth as many times as possible. I have found a 5 square metre lock-up unit within a few minutes walk from the airport but it is not cheap and there is no access to electricity should I wish to keep the battery charging throughout the winter. Does anybody have any contacts with space for rent or something else that might do the trick?

Thanks

I've sent my brother in law a text to see if his cave in the basement area of his apartment complex is for rent. I will let you know.

There is a public underground car park at Nice Etoile, off Ave Jean Medicin - you cant miss it. There is good bike parking and rails to chain to. It is obvioulsy under cover and although public it is manned 24/7 and the bikes are parked right in front of the office. There is no electricity but it is decent value and I have left mine there withot problems

I bought one of those solar trickle chargers which worked well if you really need it (above ground!) - no shortage of sun in Nice!

A little late in the day but thanks for that! I have left my bike at a storage place (Shurgard) near the airport but it ain't cheap. I will go and have a look at Nice Etoile when I am next there.

Can this work for just a long weekend, or a couple of weeks? Which size did you go for - 4-6m2? Were there any probs because it was a moto you wanted to store? I'm really interested in this; I'm very wary about just leaving the GSA at Nice airport, specially given that it's on UK plates.

I am leaving the Shurgard storage on Friday. It is not ideal mainly because lack of electricity for battery charging and unless you get the right "box" it can be very difficult/impossible to get the bike in as the door is too narrow and the angles are all wrong. I have found a proper garage for it now which is a 20 minute walk from the airport. The GSA will have a much tighter lock than my K1300S so it will be easier but I will not use Shurgard for the K anymore.

Aha - that's really interesting. My French isn't up to a detailed haggle about the specific unit, either, so this doesn't sound like a good choice.

I'll give you a buzz this evening as suggested - that's very kind of you, thanks.

A final update, for anyone considering this option in future:

My trip to the south of France was necessarily brief - high-speed autoroute dash to Geneva a couple of weeks ago, collect g/f from airport then amble down through Alps to Nice. Left the bike at LHDE in Nice, then flew back to the UK for a couple of weeks. Flew back down yesterday morning, 25 min walk to LHDE, collected the bike, and then straight back to UK via a brief detour to look at the Eiffel tower. (Came back on the Dieppe-Newhaven ferry, which was rubbish - but that's another story).

Anyway - the recommendation from Albacore was absolutely spot-on. Les Haras Des Eternelles is a specialist car storage and guardianage facility in Saint Laurent du Var, which is a suburb immediately west of (and walkable from) Nice airport. The managing director is Alex and the office is run by Annick. Both Alex and Annick have excellent English if your language skills are a bit rubbish (like mine).

The facility is a very secure underground car park; most of the cars in there have custom covers - it's that sort of place. There were four bikes in there yesterday - all BMW's, and all Brit registered. For me, I just wanted secure parking close to the airport - for which they are perfect. However, they will also do extra stuff if you need, like valeting, servicing etc - these are subcontact services, which they manage rather than carry out themselves. They can also trickle-charge your battery, and can even collect/deliver you to/from the airport (although this is chargeable on a par with Nice taxi rates, which are frightening).

Anyway - 10/10 for Les Haras Des Eternelles, if you're looking for secure bike storage in Nice then this is the place to go:

No connection etc, just a very satisfied customer. I'll using them again.

Very useful tip, jtb. But do you have any pricing info? As usual with French (and Italian) web sites, it is a mess of Flash and fancy design, hopeless to navigate and lacking the most important info. I'm considering parking my bike down South for the winter.

I got as far as €199 per month for a car but could find no mention of motorcycle prices. Got to agree with you about the site though..............talk about style over substance. Reminds me of a French tart I used to frequent - but that's another story :D.

I paid 99 euros for a month.

Auch, that was pricey. But maybe lower on longer contracts. I've found some in Malaga, prices are €40-60 for 6 months.

And Mr Rascal; think we need some pics of that tart. You're not the only dirty old man around here, you know. :rob
