Garmin 2610 a great unit.

2610 is good unit and more rugged than the 660 (maybe 550 too), the options to customise the display are much missed by me (compred with the 550).

Downsides are the dim display and the poor quality. I had three replacements - all for delaminated screens. a friend had two replaced two replaced.

Both our units have now died due to delaminated screens after around 3 years and garmin won't replace.

The demand as I recall :rob was 2:1 and there were more but never released :augie

You may find the odd member who'll admit to paying £1,000 for the original SPIII or 2610 when they arrived on the scene :D and needed to pay extra for the mount.

:rob oh, how times and technology has changed, now they whinge at £400 when a mount is put inside the box  or those that pay £50 at Lidl's on Saturday and call me Monday expecting miracles to be sorted :dabone

£800 for my first 2610 :eek
extra for the mount / audio lead and helme speakers.

Can anybody tell me the last europe map update for the 2610?
I know the 'NT' flavour is no good.
There appears to have been both a v9 version and I have a disc in my desk draw saying 2008, which I got from garmin, but never got unlocked.

I can't recall what I paid for mine (500ish?), but I have had so many years excellent use out of it I still regard it as a bargain.

cheers,
Jim

Sold mine on here two weeks ago with 2008.

With which I drove from East Belgium through France, UK, Wales and Ireland without once making a wrong turn or finding an unmapped road. Including driving through Cardiff, a town I have never been to before, without it getting me lost.

2009 was the last non NT version of the mapping.

There is some confusion caused by the fact that Garmin, in their infinite wisdom, changed the naming convention for their mapping in 2008. Prior to this they used a version number, 2008 and on they used the year.

City Nav Europe v8 = 2006
City Nav Europe v9 = 2007
City Nav Europe 2008 = 2008
City Nav Europe 2009 = 2009

You won't be able to get an unlock code for the 2008 mapping from Garmin.

If you have access to a 2009 DVD then it appears that you can still buy an unlock code from Garmin. It's tracking down a copy that might be hard.

A 2009 non NT unlock code will not work with 2008 mapping, only 2009 non NT.

... I would just like to say that IMHO the 2610 remains one of the best GPS units that I have ever used, the ability to customise it to do what you want and show what you need is brilliant, and has been taken away from users of the Nuvi.

I absolutely agree!
+1. Why do companies feel the need to pull the plug on brilliant products? I've just come back from a trip to France with 6 other bikes. My 2610 was by far the most trusted by everyone. One had recently bought a Nuvi after his 2610 broke, but he admitted that he would have preferred the 2610 if only he could buy one. :(

My first Street Pilot III was £705 from Costco. They dropped the price to £555 a few weeks later so, inspired by a fellow tosser, I went back and asked if they would match the price and they agreed and refunded me the difference!:D

Bumpkin, I have a 2009 DVD and I followed the link you gave, but after going through the login process to My Garmin, it does not give me an option to activate that particular DVD (which I originally got from Garmin last year). I tried emailing Garmin on this topic a couple of days ago but they did not reply :(.

I have also tried following the link on the original activation email I received from Garmin, but that does not work either.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Looks like you're doing nothing wrong, just tried following through the process myself and it looks like they've withdrawn all support for non-NT mapping :( They still have an 'Unlock this DVD' link on the product page though which is misleading.

It looks like the only path open to you is the unofficial naughty one as alluded to above.

The fact that you have a DVD does not entitle you to use the mapping, Garmin ship these out FOC on request to registered users. You need to then pay Garmin for an unlock code for the mapping though it looks like that opportunity has now passed for CNE 2009 and thus all non NT devices.

Costco are very good at customer service, should be a model for any organisation dealing with customers. I'd not want to be one of their suppliers though, you'd get all manner of tat being returned, right old nightmare.

Any idea where to get a DVD with 2009 on from now, I know how to "use" it, but I haven't got the DVD?

Yep, I had pretty much reached that conclusion myself. I have upgraded twice before and would happily pay to do so again. In the past I tended to upgrade only every other version as the changes between versions were usually not great. I got caught out with v2009 :(
