So I picked up my new WC TE a few weeks back and have done approx 125 miles to date. Turned the bike on today to move it and when I tried to turn it off the starter motor ran continuously ....er what do I do now!

The bike is keyless so if I pressed the starter button the bike would run again however when I turned the ignition off the started motor would continuously run again. After about 15 mins some smoke came off the starter motor and then the whole bike switched off and went dead...nothing nada kaput.

I'll be ringing up tomorrow however I now have a completely dead bike with I guess shagged starter motor and right side handlebar switches (kill switch button)?

I assume if I insist on the replacement of the above this will fix it however anyone seen this before and would there be potentially other damage from the continuous running at all...I assume not?

I'm at home so rather then wait for BMW assist I went out with the family :)

I'll call the dealer tomorrow, its all under warranty so just expecting them to pick the bike up and sort to all out!

No ifs about it - you will insist on a replacement starter motor. When the magic smoke escapes - its fecked.
Sounds like a stuck starter solenoid. It happens.
Can't think of anything else that would have been harmed apart from the starter.

You ask 'what do I do now' - I would have dropped the feed off the starter.

What a bugger, I'm sure they will sort it mate, you'll love the bike, must admit that bothers me about having keyless start, kill switch is the only option I suppose.

Or disconnect the battery.

Sorry to hear about this, its very disappointing but I am sure you will get to love the bike again when its repaired.

Leave well alone and call the dealer.

They will either collect it or tell you to ring BMW Assist to uplift it.

It's under warranty - let them sort it.

Good luck!

Bang on. Don't touch anything. It's a BMW problem and you can do without anybody accusing you of fiddling around with it.

Mate had this on brand new GSA 15 miles on clock, replaced starter, switch etc etc.

It's a well known fact that all electrical components are smoke powered, this is why they don't work once the smoke escapes...

This is nothing to do with keyless, the starter switch on the handlebars is the issue.

I know, just its nice to be able to turn off the ignition and pull the key out rather than having to trust a black bit of plastic that makes lots of funning electricary sounds when you press it, As well as the red plastic starter / kill switch that BMW have never had a problem with

yep agree with this , had both sets of switches replaced on my bars , the kill switch?start switch will either stick when its pushed up or down at some time…mine stuck when i wanted to kill the engine, and it would not release so I could not start the bike again !!! yours as stuck on the start position…..BMW know this is an issue yet keep sending out bikes with cheap chinese switches

Most of the old farts on here are scared of keyless as it is, without any more scaremongery that it's the demon!

Lol whats up Nuts, it is a demon I tell you, but I got it any way its the future you know.

Old fart

It is the future!:rob

It gets the people that don't have it in a tangle though. I've not had any issues with mine, and will be getting it on my next bike later this year.:thumb
