Help needed,i am a complete techno numpty.
I have seen a garmin 2610 that has european mapping etc it has never been used.
It has a 1gb memory card.
Is this enough to carry all the european mapping,if not any idea of cost to increase to sufficient memory.
Also do you have to purchase some form of autocom to be able to hear it or is there another way.

Thanks for any help

Steve

You'll need a 2gb card at least to get the majority of europe on with the latest map sets....4gb would be better.

Good news is they are as cheap as chips....go to MyMemory.com and do a search for 4gb CF cards. ....Just sold my 2610...hope I don't live to regret it..

you need at least 2.gb for the whole of europe.
2.gb - 4.gb cf card via ebay £10-£15
2009 mapping from garmin £60 if you want up to date..
on the mains lead is also an audio jack [same as ipod/walkman etc]

The rest has already been covered and Ash has mentioned that there's an audio out jack on the motorcycle power lead. This is however 2.5mm mono rather than 3.5mm stereo so you'll need to make up or use an adaptor. You can't just plug in some Walkman ear buds. The Quest mount used 3.5mm, don't know why they use 2.5mm on the 2610/2720/2820 cradle and lead. I would imagine that the 3.5mm would be more robust. I ran an extension from the Garmin lead to another jack (3.5mm) at the back of my tank bag that I plug the lead from my lid into.

Same mount and lead is used for my 2720. I spent about £20 at Maplin online inc. P&P on parts to make up my own hardwired twin speaker headset, the thin mylar speakers they sell fit neatly behind the lining of my Arai and don't touch my ears yet are effective up to silly speeds with ear plugs (the 2720 has a speed related volume option, not sure about the 2610). Only down-side is that I have to remember to unplug before walking away from the bike...

Not sure if 4Gb works with 2610. Thought it was 2Gb max, but stand to be corrected.

2.5-3.5 adapter are only penny's or maplin do a pack with ext coiled lead and 3 or 4 different adapters for £5.99.
i have the coiled lead running from the mount, under the tank and coming out at the side by my leg so i can plug in my earpiece.
touratech did / do a complete kit. including helmet speakers.
or search ebay for - helmet speakers, loads on there.

Thanks folks some good info there, couple more numpty questions!
Does anyone know if a 4gb memory card is ok or should i get 2, 2gb.
I have now got the sat nav,has anyone ever had any problems with the mounting plate, the garmin one looks pretty flimsy.
And a really daft question. Is it waterproof? or should one take extra precautions when it's persisting it down.
I love this site best £12 i ever spent and your all so gentle with numpties like me:augie

Cheers Steve

If you put all of UK on to one card then you can get the rest of europe on a another, cf cards are really cheap so its not a problem cost wise.
Having looked into it, the 2610 only supports a 2gb card however unofficialy it will recognize some 4 gb cards but its a bit hit and miss as to which ones, much better to get 2 smaller ones

.. Does anyone know if a 4gb memory card is ok or should i get 2 x 2gb.
I thought there had been a software upgrade that allowed the 2610 to accept 4Gb cards. No idea where I read that mind you, but I guess it was on here somewhere. Perhaps I'm losing it. :augie

Don't mean this to sound funny, but do you really need all of Europe on one card? How many countries do you you intend visiting on any one trip? My point is that if CF card memory is limited, do you really want to carry a 2nd card with say all the Scandinavian maps on it, if you're only going to say France or Germany? :nenau It's so easy to download the maps, why not just download the maps for the countries you're going to as and when you need them? If you want to be extravagant, chuck in a couple of adjoining countries just in case you fancy a bit of a blat :D but lets be blunt the chances are you're unlikely to need all of Europe at any one time. I think with my card, I just removed the maps around the Arctic circle and worked down till I got to about 2Gb, because I hadn't planned on going to the Arctic circle in the next few weeks. :thumb

The unit is waterproof but be careful to dry the unit off afterwards as otherwise the non-scratch film over the screen lifts off.

You don't need voice guidance, a big warning disgram comes up before junctions, so just mount the unit in your line of sight and keep an eye open for 'distance/time to next turn'.

Downloading big map sets takes a long time and wipes out any maps that were already there. If you were to load the Maroc Topo map (for example), you'd have to also include every other map you wanted in the download. So the best technique is to have one card that holds as much of Europe as you will ever want and to have a smaller card for individual downloads.

This latter is one case where the Zumo is better--the standard Europe load is in one area of the system, individual downloads are in a separate area.

One thing; best not to leave the 2610 on your bike, or in your garage overnight. Some suffer from condensation problems which can obscure part of the screen from the inside. Although it will dry out, it's annoying. By keeping it overnight in your house (hotel room, etc), you can avoid the issue.

Another numpty Question

I take it you mean how much space in MB the entire set of uk maps takes up ?
