Garmin 2610 questions

Hope someone can help.

I am about to but a 2610 from SportExtreme and I would like to know the answers to a few questions I have.

1. How long is the power cable? I am going to use it from the power socket below the seat and don't know if the standard cable will be long enough. I have a BMW socket to Cigarette socket converter. Where can I get cables to fit BMW socket that are long enough?


2. Can the 2610 be set to avoid the toll roads in France?

3. Does the standard audio cable interface with an Autocom and how long is it? My autocom is under the passenger seat.

4. Does anyone have experience of buying from SportExtreme? How long do they take to deliver?

5. Where is the best place to buy a RAM mount for the 2610?

1. The cable that comes with the 2610 is long enough for that, but it's a car cable with a built in speaker at the plug end. It makes more sense to cut off that spaker thingy and plug, and wire it in instead of using a plug. Just buy an extra cable for the car, if you intend to use it there too. Don't buy the motorcycle cable, the audio connection on that is very close to the unit, where you don't want it if you're going to use an Autocom.

2. Yes it can.

3. There is no standard cable with the 2610 for audio connection to an Autocom. I think the best way is to make your own starting from the cut off car cable. Solder connections rarely fail...

4. I don't have any experience with them, but have only heard positive comments so far.

Hi Tom, I got my 2610 from sportextreme, very professional outfit, goods arrived in 3 days delivered by ups.

For the power cable I cut the connector from the mains power supply and attached an AMP plug with crimped and soldered connections this was then covered with a glued heat shrink boot to hold everything firm. I then made up a flying leed that runs from the battery up to the GPS mount incorporating a 1/2 amp fuse terminating with another AMP connector. I have 2 of these flying leeds, one on the GS and the other on the VFR. I also use the same connector for my optimate to charge the battery. The cut mains adapter wire also has a connector fitted as can be seen in the enclosed picture. This saved cutting into the car addaptor so i can still use it in the car.

he'll need a different cable I suppose.

nice bit of wiring - how do you program routes etc into your 2610 without a mains cable, or did you buy another?

Hi Mike as i said in my original post i wired an AMP connector to the power supply so the cut off garmin plug simply fastens back on to the mains adapter.

Right MK11 wire with audio output. Standard Garmin car cigarette lighter plug with speaker, wire cut 6" from GPS unit end and AMP plug fitted so it still connects to the fused flying lead I have on my bikes for the MK1 and optimate charger, and a mono 3.5mm female jack plug fitted on the audio side to allow for speaker/headset use. As before the opposite gender connectors are fitted to the other side of the cut wire to allow re connection and the use of the standard wire in the car. This set up should be usable with an autocom using a wire with the correct size jackplugs would it not? Next thing is to get hold of a headset or speaker to fit in my helmet to give it a try, any ideas?

Autocom lead

The Aurocom lead that can be used for the SP3 works for the 2610. The only plug to unplug is the strange one and so there's no need to plug / unplug the headset lead.
