Anyone any experince/advice on this. I've managed to create a hole in the clear film on the screen of my 2610. Gutted! Dont know how its happened must have been knocked and the film shattered Still works fine but obviously needs repair - fine in car but not waterproof for bike. Guess I need to get garmin to sort it. Are they going to tell me I need a complete new screeen? Is it a fix you can do yourself if you can get the part? Grateful for any advice.

You can buy screen protectors very cheaply from Ebay which would keep the water out.

Garmin's advice

For info, spoke to Garmin who were very helpful but can only offer replacement unit for £132 (with 1 year guarantee though). Seems there was a problem with the refelctive screen peeling off some units but its not warranty covered. Still not sure if I should open it up myself, source some anti reflective plastic to replace myself. Main thing obviously is has to be waterproof. £132 quid for it not to be reflective is a lot of bucks! Anyone unscrewed one before?

Andy, mine did the same thing a couple of weeks ago when I was in Germany then lifted all across the screen overnight. I peeled it off because I could not see the screen properly and no water has got in. There is a seal between the screen and body and it is still ( the seal) sat on the edge of the top laminate. I have noticed that the screen is starting to scratch and this week I have put some clear adhesive film on top of the screen, a bit like wide sellotape, to try to protect it. It seems to be working ok. nothing to lose really. I was quoted the same price as you, not really happy with what I think is a manufacturing fault ! Stan :(

Thanks for this. Atleast i'm not alone and yes I'm sure it is a manufacturing fault. The advice above from Timolgra is sound. Had a quick look at ebay and there a number of covers available for £3 aprox which look likes may fix my problem. Have used similar on my PDA for years. Wish I 'd put on when I got it!

Garmin

I bought mine back in 2004 - the screen protection cracked up earlier this year and they replaced the whole unit for nothing (just recorded delivery cost to them). It was described on the phone as a 'known issue' and they duly gave me my 'RW' number.

As mentioned, the unit is still waterfproof when the film goes, but the screen is then prone to permanent scratching.

Great customer service from Garmin - it seems that the softly, softly approach works best with them though - no ranting or raving!

Word of warning - do not use Muc-off Bike Spray with any GPS unit on the bike - you'll see why the next morning.

Yep it is a known issue and until quite recently the units were replace FOC - the unit and all the kit of parts AND the latest Mapsource with FREE unlock.

Now however they seem to have changed their mind and want close to what people were buying a new unit for an 'out of warranty repair'.

Personally I'd push back on them as "you know loads of people who have had the same problem and obtained a freebie" - it might work :augie

Cheers I will do! It seems pretty unreasonable as I've only had my unit a few months. I bought one of the last available from GPSWarehouse. Really pleased with it but the thought of spending £136 on something that may do exactly the same again seems a bit steep! Good advice. Cheers guys. If I get success I'll post.

Anyone got the contact number for Garmin? Their website gives some numbers, but they are un-obtainable.
I have e-mailed them, as my screen has lifted, no reply yet.

If you can't get Garmin to play ball remember that your contract is with GPS Warehouse. If the unit is not fit for purpose it's them that have the legal obligation to fix it, not Garmin.

Eventually got through to Garmin, I explained that the anti-glare had bubbled up.
He asked me what I clean it with, told him never cleaned it, just wipe it now and then, and remove it from the bike when the bike gets washed.

That lit all his lights, " Ah good, we get a lot of bikers saying they use bike cleaner on it when they wash the bike, so we will not repair it if they use anything like that":spitfire

he gave me a RMA number, and I got a brand new unit back yesterday:beerjug:

Thought it was a recon, but the plastic was immaculate:bounce1

So if yer gonna phone up, tell 'em you never clean it with any cleaning product, just a clean cloth, and you should be fine:rob

I also mentioned I knew a couple of other people that had had their screen replaced.
