is there such a thing as a rubber mount which you can use with the 2620 to remove or at least reduce the vibration which apprently knacker's the hard drive in this model? also has any body got one of these and used it on the GS etc and found them usless on bikes as reported:confused:

Touratech does this mount for the 2610/2620 with heavy duty rubbers, but I think that your problem well illustrates the advantage of a 2610 with CF memory over a 2620 with microdrive when used on a motorcycle application.

TOURATECH MVG

Thanks again Greg just had a look on the web site and they apparently make a mvg unit which reduces vibration between 90-95% for GPS's which are not quite motorcyle happy cost is £90 but if it works it's cheaper than selling the 2620 to buy a 2610

once again Thanks!

Graham,

every thread I've seen suggests that the 2620 is completely unsuitable for motorcycle use. How long have you had it? Did the dealer you bought it from know you were planning to use it on a bike? Any chance of chopping it in with him for a 2610?

Buying a different mount and hoping it'll do the trick is throwing good money after bad, IMHO. If none of the above applies, stick it on Ebay - you'll probably get most of your money back, then you can buy a unit which has been tested on a bike.

No 2620 experience.

I have a 2610 and wonder if the micro drive can be removed and CF be put in to replace it?

If so, you may have options open that way?

I believe that the SP2620 made prior to August 2004 were simply a SP2610 with a microdrive plugged in (and no CD copy).

After that they went to a direct microdrive and a screw on cover.

With Garmin's policy of £140 quid top whack for a repair, it might even be feasible to get them to swap the drive for the card slot ??

Certainly worth phoning them though, Garmin are exceptionally good on customer srvice so at least you'll geta good answer from them on technical possibilities.

Why not ask Garmin?

Graham,

If Garmin tell you it is suitable for bike use( or says nothing to the contrary) in the manual it would be reasonable to assume you are covered by their guarantee if the disc drive fails. At that point you would have a fair claim for a more suitable replacement with solid state storage at no charge. So perhaps the manual is first stop and then a query to Garmin after looking at their website for any warnings as to suitability.

Best of luck.

Graham,

I looked at the garmin site FAQs and they say that a IBM/Hitachi 1GB microdrive is fine as a customer add on for a 2610. I therefore expect that they accept the 2620, which they say superceeds the 2610, is bike compatible. Perhaps most of these scare stories are unfounded?

Thanks Terry for your info i will also purchase a Touratech hvg handle bar fixing kit recommended by Greg which apparently removes 95% vibration so hopefully this should solve it;)

i must admit you lot try to help a fellow GSer and i can't thankyou all enough Cheers:beerjug:
